{"id":8185,"date":"2022-11-25T12:39:53","date_gmt":"2022-11-25T12:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=8185"},"modified":"2022-11-28T12:13:55","modified_gmt":"2022-11-28T12:13:55","slug":"the-world-cop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2022\/11\/25\/the-world-cop\/","title":{"rendered":"The World COP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The COP closing plenary was 5 hours 10 minutes long on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1QENy1YYPKQ\">YouTube<\/a>. \u00a0It must have seemed much longer in real time.<\/p>\n<p>It was sponsored by Coca Cola. \u00a0Here's what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/environment\/article\/2022\/11\/04\/cop27-s-problematic-sponsor-coca-cola_6002927_114.html\">Le Monde<\/a> had to say about the inappropriateness of this.<\/p>\n<p>If we're to pay reparations to atone for our eco-crime of inventing the industrial resolution, who's going to pay? \u00a0Should we be increasing tax now or borrowing (from our grandchildren's grandchildren)? \u00a0What a great subject for a school discussion \u2013 as is: should we pay reparations at all given that we're only responsible for &lt;5% of lifetime global emissions, despite our original sin of the industrial revolution. \u00a0Compare that with the Chinese figures). \u00a0Some say we should be being thanked rather than vilified for kick-starting the process and enabling faster human development. \u00a0This is not a universally popular view but it can be argued from an economic history perspective. \u00a0Anyway, rather than arguing over who should pay for history, we surely ought to be focusing on a positive future for all with specific proposals.<\/p>\n<p>On a different note, I enjoyed FIFA's embarrassment at the Qatari ban on Budweiser \"beer\" at the world cup. \u00a0What a pity they didn't sign up with an outfit that brewed <em>beer<\/em> (as opposed to \"beer\").<\/p>\n<p>Finally, there's room for a bit of \u00fcber schadenfreude at the Rising Sun's famous victory the other day. \u00a0It's what World Cups are for.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The COP closing plenary was 5 hours 10 minutes long on YouTube. \u00a0It must have seemed much longer in real time.
