{"id":821,"date":"2011-08-10T09:18:36","date_gmt":"2011-08-10T08:18:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=821"},"modified":"2011-08-10T09:18:36","modified_gmt":"2011-08-10T08:18:36","slug":"this-is-just-the-time-for-sound-bites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2011\/08\/10\/this-is-just-the-time-for-sound-bites\/","title":{"rendered":"This is just the time for sound-bites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the saintly Tony Blair said \u00a0\"<em>Although now is not the time for sound-bites, I can feel the hand of history on my shoulder<\/em> ...\" (or somesuch), I fear that I must have cringed and groaned, probably in equal measure. \u00a0And maybe there was a bit of envy in there somewhere as I've never been much good at soundbites (or had a good scriptwriter for that matter). \u00a0Anyway, academics tend to prefer mouthfulls rather than bite-size chunks of ideas, and the written word to the spoken one.<\/p>\n<p>So it came as a bit of a surprise to find that I had uttered such a bite which had been captured in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiltshirewildlife.org\/\">Wiltshire Wildlife Trust's<\/a> annual report to members. \u00a0Earlier in the year I was filmed (as a Trustee) at at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiltshirewildlife.org\/Reserves\/langfordlakes\">Langford Lakes<\/a>,\u00a0one of the Trust's education centres \/ nature reserves. \u00a0It was an unscripted experience, and I recall there were numerous takes owing to our being interrupted by a rumbling train, over-flying ducks, the wrong kind of shadows, and the chattering of passing walkers, and I have no memory of the questions or answers. \u00a0But apparently, I said this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Humans can only live on this planet because of the goods and services that the natural world provides. \u00a0At heart, this is what environmental education is trying to teach us.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think myself rather too self-satisfied by this.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the saintly Tony Blair said \u00a0\"Although now is not the time for sound-bites, I can feel the hand of history on my shoulder ...\" (or somesuch), I fear that I must have cringed and groaned, probably in equal measure....<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-821","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/821","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=821"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/821\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=821"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=821"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=821"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
