{"id":8325,"date":"2023-05-23T06:51:12","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T06:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=8325"},"modified":"2023-05-23T06:51:12","modified_gmt":"2023-05-23T06:51:12","slug":"not-quite-a-manifesto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2023\/05\/23\/not-quite-a-manifesto\/","title":{"rendered":"Not quite a manifesto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to LabourLife, the party has published its not quite a manifesto for the election they hope to win in 2024. \u00a0It's a prelude, a first draft, long (wish) list, a blueprint. \u00a0It's full of statements that fall short of being specific or detailed. \u00a0This is what it says about education:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"BodyFragment\">\n<table width=\"798\">\n<tbody class=\"\">\n<tr class=\"\">\n<td class=\"\">\n<div class=\"\"><b class=\"\"><i class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\">Reform schools<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\">Roll out an ambitious school improvement plan that would see investment in a high-quality teaching and support staff workforce to deliver an excellent education for all<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\"><b class=\"\">Recruit thousands of new teachers<\/b> to fill vacancies and skills gaps, <b class=\"\">ensuring that teachers are no longer asked to deliver unmanageable workloads<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\"><b class=\"\">Deliver ongoing teacher training<\/b>, so each teacher has the skills to support every child to thrive<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\">Launch an <b class=\"\">expert review of the current school curriculum<\/b> for England and make it compulsory for all state schools<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\">Implement a <b class=\"\">national strategy with clear targets to close the attainment gap<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\">Require all schools to cooperate with their local authority on admissions, SEND inclusion and place planning<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><b class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\">Work towards more children with SEND having their needs met and being educated in mainstream schools, including by ensuring teachers and support staff have the training they need<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\">Introduce <b class=\"\">fully-funded free breakfast clubs in every primary school<\/b><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\"><b class=\"\">Reform citizenship education<\/b> to include practical life skills such as managing personal finances, introduce <b class=\"\">two weeks\u2019 worth of compulsory work experience<\/b>and provide professional careers advice in schools and colleges<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><b class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\">Ensure all teachers have qualified status<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\"><b class=\"\">Reform inspections<\/b> to ensure Ofsted provides true quality assurance for the government and the public and supports positive, proactive school improvement<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #0042aa\"><b class=\"\">End the system of headline grades<\/b>.
