{"id":8339,"date":"2023-06-13T09:40:41","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T09:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=8339"},"modified":"2023-06-13T10:38:12","modified_gmt":"2023-06-13T10:38:12","slug":"curriculum-for-exc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2023\/06\/13\/curriculum-for-exc\/","title":{"rendered":"Curriculum for Exc....."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote the other day about\u00a0Michael Young (and others) who introduced the notion of <em>powerful knowledge <\/em>which\u00a0they argued can enable students to move beyond their own experiences. \u00a0This debate is an active one in Scotland where its <a href=\"https:\/\/education.gov.scot\/media\/0g2cthxv\/cfefactfileoverview.pdf\">Curriculum for Excellence<\/a><i>\u00a0<\/i>is under review and\u00a0reform<i>.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Scotland\u2019s Curriculum for Excellence is widely disparaged.\u00a0 So much so that it is often referred to colloquially as Curriculum for Excrement.\u00a0 I have not made this up!\u00a0 The problem lies in its focus on experience and skills at the expense of the knowledge which enables experience to be understood and skills contextualised. \u00a0This focus limits the educational and life chances of those from culturally disadvantaged homes where literacy is not valued. \u00a0There are a lot of these on both sides of the border.<\/p>\n<p>The respected <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/politicsandpolicy\/curriculum-for-excellence\/\">Lindsay Paterson<\/a> was asked about the problems with CfE on the BBC's Today Programme last month. \u00a0You can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NnxokFmAzMw\">listen here<\/a> for his comments.<\/p>\n<p>I found Prof Paterson's talk by searching for 'curriculum for excrement', although, of course, he does not use the phrase. \u00a0If you do this, all the sites that come up are for\u00a0Curriculum for Excellence apart from the one linking to the BBC. \u00a0Odd. \u00a0You have to search for something like\u00a0<em>Curriculum for Excellence critique<\/em> to see what people and institutions think. \u00a0For example the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2021\/jun\/21\/scottish-education-system-to-be-overhauled-after-damning-oecd-report\">OECD<\/a>. \u00a0And <a href=\"https:\/\/dspace.stir.ac.uk\/bitstream\/1893\/11356\/1\/Curriculum%20for%20Excellence_SER_FINAL.pdf\">others<\/a> ...<\/p>\n<p>And now Wales has gone down this line as well. \u00a0I dread to think what the next English (ie UK) government will come up with. \u00a0It's worth remembering that the Gove reforms were a reaction to the Blair government's own venture into the debatable land of skills.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I wrote the other day about\u00a0Michael Young (and others) who introduced the notion of powerful knowledge which\u00a0they argued can enable students to move beyond their own experiences. \u00a0This debate is an active one in Scotland where its Curriculum for Excellence\u00a0is...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[2,4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-8339","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comment","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8339","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=8339"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8339\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=8339"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=8339"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=8339"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
