new research<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I thought this was a rather bold assertion. \u00a0The opening sentence hedged a few bets:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Increasing understanding of conservation issues in schools doesn\u2019t necessarily translate into attitude change, says new research from the Milner Centre for Evolution at the University of Bath<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is less bold, but hardly new. \u00a0The next said that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>conservation educational activities should be evaluated carefully to make sure they are achieving the desired objectives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I was grateful for the insight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The press release went on:<\/p>\n<p>\"... researchers from the University of Bath worked with conservation non-profit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/maioconservation\">Maio Biodiversity Foundation<\/a> (FMB) in Maio, Cape Verde, to assess the impacts of environmental education on schoolchildren from the island. \u00a0The Cape Verde Islands, near the west coast of Africa, are powerhouses of evolution, home to an abundance of wildlife, including whales, turtles, sharks and shorebirds. \u00a0However, unsustainable practices such as turtle poaching, off-road excursions through protected areas, and large scale litter dumping threatens to put local wildlife at risk. \u00a0The researchers investigated the influence of a one-time classroom activity on children\u2019s knowledge of local environmental issues, environmental attitudes and future aspirations.<\/p>\n<p>The half-day activity, with 10 classes of 9\u201310-year-olds (4<sup>th<\/sup> grade) across eight schools (around 140 children), was focussed on the large wetland habitat of the island that is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including the largest breeding population of plover shorebirds that are genetically unique to the island.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers talked to the children about the different species found locally, the environmental issues that threatened the wildlife and used a game activity to show the complex ecosystem of the area, helping the children understand how all the different parts were connected. \u00a0They assessed the children\u2019s conservation knowledge, and attitudes to science and the environment before and after the activities to see how it had changed.<\/p>\n<p>They found that whilst the activity was successful in improving the children\u2019s knowledge and awareness of environmental issues, it did not change their attitudes towards animals and other wildlife.\"<\/p>\n<p>........................................<\/p>\n<p>So, we have a<span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #e32400\">half-day activity<\/span><span class=\"\"> in which researchers talked to the children about the different species found locally, the environmental issues that threatened the wildlife, and a <\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #ff4013\">game activity<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #333333\"> to show the complex ecosystem of the area, helping the children understand how all the different parts were connected. \u00a0Based on all this, t<\/span><span class=\"\">hey then confidently <\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #ff4013\">assessed the children\u2019s conservation knowledge, and attitudes to science and the environment before and after the activities<\/span><span class=\"\" style=\"color: #333333\"> to see how it had changed. \u00a0No one went outside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of the authors is quoted in the press release saying<\/p>\n<p>\"This study shows the importance of evaluating activities - we shouldn\u2019t assume that increasing knowledge will help solve environmental issues. \u00a0Instead we must carefully plan and assess activities to make sure they are achieving the desired objectives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The author plans more research to assess whether field trips are more impactful than classroom activities, or whether it simply distracts them.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose I should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/oryx\/article\/environmental-education-in-the-classroom-pilot-study-in-cabo-verde-suggests-differing-impacts-on-local-knowledge-and-environmental-attitudes\/157103EF591D8C7D46D31F8FC51DE81E\">read the paper<\/a>, but with this sort of communication it's hardly inviting ...<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A press release from the University of Bath came my way. \u00a0It concerned some environmental education research by the Milner Centre for Evolution.
