{"id":8454,"date":"2023-10-27T08:18:29","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T08:18:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=8454"},"modified":"2023-10-27T08:18:29","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T08:18:29","slug":"learning-and-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2023\/10\/27\/learning-and-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Learning and Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When writing about youngsters in schools, there are two lines (schools?) of thought about the term to be used. \u00a0Is it <em>pupils <\/em>or<em> students<\/em>? \u00a0Students, of course, is <em>le mot juste<\/em> for FE and HE, and a generation ago it was always pupils in schools. \u00a0I guess that even when I was in the 6th form (it was a while back), I was only ever a pupil.<\/p>\n<p>But these days, it's less clear cut. \u00a0In my own scribblings, I tend to use <em>students<\/em> for both schooling and HE\/FE. \u00a0But doing so runs foul of the Times Style Guide which says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\"Student is now commonly and rather tiresomely used to refer to schoolchildren. There may be little point in resisting this as the usage is almost universal within the education system, but there is certainly no reason to encourage it.
