{"id":8567,"date":"2024-04-08T08:25:01","date_gmt":"2024-04-08T08:25:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=8567"},"modified":"2024-04-08T08:25:01","modified_gmt":"2024-04-08T08:25:01","slug":"1-giving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2024\/04\/08\/1-giving\/","title":{"rendered":"1% Giving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our World in Data [OWD] reports that a 2024 study in <em>Nature Climate Change <\/em>asked around 130,000 people if they\u2019d be willing to give at least 1% of their income to tackle climate change, and that, across a 125-country sample, 69% said \u201cyes\u201d. \u00a0The study then asked people what proportion of others in their country would likely say \u201cyes\u201d to the same question. The average across countries was 43%. OWD said that this shows that most of us systematically underestimate how widespread support for climate action is, in every country surveyed. \u00a0Well, maybe. \u00a0It might also show that we take a generous view of our own comparative generosity and associated saintliness. The article asked why this \u201cperception gap\u201d exists, and details of its analysis <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/climate-change-support?utm_source=OWID+Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=0ac6a343d1-biweekly-digest-2024-03-29&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_2e166c1fc1-3875482ed3-%5BLIST_EMAIL_ID%5D\">are here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The OWD authors note: \"We should always be cautious when examining people\u2019s claims that they are willing to pay. Saying you\u2019ll give up some of your income is not the same as actually doing it.\" \u00a0Indeed.<\/p>\n<p>And might it matter to whom it was given? \u00a0I'd say so. \u00a0Giving \u00a3100, say, to your local wildlife trust is one thing; Gifting it to a government agency such as DEFRA, quite another.
