{"id":8583,"date":"2024-05-08T11:22:03","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T11:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=8583"},"modified":"2024-05-09T06:54:02","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T06:54:02","slug":"clapping-hands-and-flapping-tents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2024\/05\/08\/clapping-hands-and-flapping-tents\/","title":{"rendered":"Clapping Hands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>That's the sound coming from Whitehall as civil servants congratulate each other on their ability to cut the prices of new battery electric cars \u2013 BEVs \u2013 with reductions of around 20% now being reported as manufacturers struggle to sell cars that the public isn't persuaded it wants. \u00a0I don't wish to claim too much by way of clairvoyance, but I did <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2023\/04\/29\/a-cunning-plan-by-the-government\/\">foresee this<\/a> 12 months ago. \u00a0They are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatcar.com\/make\/nissan\/ariya\/hatchback\/deals?trim=advance\">still pricey<\/a> though.<\/p>\n<p>That such policies might distort the market seemed quite possible. \u00a0By way of evidence, the head of Ford Europe has just said that the company plans to divert petrol cars deliveries from the UK to the continent. \u00a0The FT quotes him: \"We can\u2019t push EVs into the market against demand\u201d he said. \u00a0\"We are not going to sell EVs at huge losses just to buy compliance.
