{"id":862,"date":"2011-08-31T14:46:36","date_gmt":"2011-08-31T13:46:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=862"},"modified":"2011-08-31T14:46:36","modified_gmt":"2011-08-31T13:46:36","slug":"cosmic-ray-education-anyone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2011\/08\/31\/cosmic-ray-education-anyone\/","title":{"rendered":"Cosmic Ray Education, anyone?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There have been news stories in the past week about one of CERN's less obscure experiments, but with one of the most contrived acronymns around: CLOUD [ <strong>C<\/strong>osmics <strong>L<\/strong>eaving <strong>OU<\/strong>tdoor <strong>D<\/strong>roplets ] \u2013 quite ridiculous, but then these are physicists. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/public.web.cern.ch\/public\/en\/research\/CLOUD-en.html\">CLOUD<\/a> website (and\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/node\/21526788\">Economist<\/a>) are good\u00a0places to pick up the detail, but with only the latter dealing with the controversy emerging in relation to climate change. \u00a0 CLOUD, you see, \"offers [a] new explanation for global warming\" \u2013 well, according to comments, for example, in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tucone.com\/2011\/08\/31\/climate-change-cloud-results-offer-new-explanation-for-global-warming\/\">TUCONE<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/jamesdelingpole\/100102296\/sun-causes-climate-change-shock\/\">Telegraph<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/opinion.financialpost.com\/2011\/08\/26\/lawrence-solomon-science-now-settled\/\">Financial Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nigel Calder's comment on the pleas of \u00a0Rolf-Dieter Heuer, CERN's Director General, for its scientists to steer clear of politics (that is, the stick to the physics and not mention what it might mean for us all) is <a href=\"http:\/\/calderup.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/17\/\u201cno-you-mustnt-say-what-it-means\u201d\/\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Phew! \u00a0So, August has ended with a bang \u2013 but mercifully, not a big one. \u00a0And the Higgs boson still keeps its watching brief on events, well out of sight.<\/p>\n<p>What, I wonder, will all those beavering away at Climate Change Education make of all this. \u00a0I suspect that, as with so much of the global warming debate, it may well prove too hot to handle. \u00a0Pity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There have been news stories in the past week about one of CERN's less obscure experiments, but with one of the most contrived acronymns around: CLOUD [ Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets ] \u2013 quite ridiculous, but then these are physicists....<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":237,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-862","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news-and-updates"],"acf":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack-related-posts":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/862","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/237"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=862"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/862\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=862"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=862"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=862"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
