{"id":942,"date":"2011-10-02T17:25:03","date_gmt":"2011-10-02T16:25:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/?p=942"},"modified":"2011-10-02T17:25:03","modified_gmt":"2011-10-02T16:25:03","slug":"life-but-is-it-an-improvement-on-how-we-know-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/edswahs\/2011\/10\/02\/life-but-is-it-an-improvement-on-how-we-know-it\/","title":{"rendered":"LIFE \u2013 but is it an improvement on how we know it?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the EAUC's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelifeindex.org.uk\/\">LIFE<\/a> fires up for its 1st November launch, publicity for it increases. \u00a0The latest I have spotted is in the EAUC's own digital <a href=\"http:\/\/us2.campaign-archive2.com\/?u=98f0114cf6b7e6577e2520425&amp;id=4730959839&amp;e=baf4e6c237\">EARTH<\/a> magazine where you will find the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>No time-wasting please!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>LiFE directly replaces UtC [ Universities that Count ] and we\u2019ve listened and learned from all the feedback we have received. \u00a0We have openly engaged with the sector and have been working hard to ensure that LiFE is not just another time-consuming reporting tool that is a drain on your resources.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>What is LiFE?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>LiFE is a bespoke and comprehensive system that will help universities and colleges manage, measure, improve and promote their social responsibility and sustainability performance. \u00a0It has been developed in collaboration with institutions and people from across the sector, as well as our funding partners HEFCE, HEFCW, SFC and DELNI.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>Not just another league table<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We know how disappointing it can be to see all of your hard work ignored as league tables\u00a0are publicly announced that bear no real relationship to how you are genuinely performing. \u00a0LiFE is not about random naming and shaming. \u00a0Instead, LiFE institutions can use their accreditation to publicly promote their achievements and benchmark their success against the sector, both nationally and internationally. That makes LiFE a much more positive and effective experience for institutions than a traditional league table.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Quite a lot of promises here from EAUC \u2013 following a deal of investment from HEFCE. \u00a0 Both must be hoping that institutions will buy into it \u2013 metaphorically as well as more literally through their cheque-books.<\/p>\n<p>EAUC Director, Iain Patton, said this in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eauc.org.uk\/an_interview_with_iain_patton_on_our_new_way_of?utm_source=EAUC+Members&amp;utm_campaign=4730959839-earth_and_UB_out&amp;utm_medium=email\">interview<\/a> in the October issue of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.universitybusiness.co.uk\/\">University Business<\/a> <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yudu.com\/item\/embedded_reader\/412334\/University-Business-Magazine-October-2011-Issue?refid=18545\">magazine<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>LiFE accreditation will be confirmed through independent verification. \u00a0That\u2019s an important part of the value that the LiFE accreditation brings \u2013 independent verification. \u00a0In addition, we\u2019ll have a process that allows for peer review of performance. \u00a0It\u2019s important that universities and colleges are allowed to learn from, and share with, one another. \u00a0... \u00a0They will also be able to use LiFE to directly drive improvement within their institutions. \u00a0That makes LiFE a much more positive and effective experience for institutions than a traditional league table.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Appropriate ambition; but it will be interesting to see how accreditation and validity are kept in balance, particularly as it's not at all clear <em>what<\/em> is to count as \"sustainable\", and <em>who<\/em> is to say.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the EAUC's LIFE fires up for its 1st November launch, publicity for it increases. \u00a0The latest I have spotted is in the EAUC's own digital EARTH magazine where you will find the following: No time-wasting please!
