{"id":88,"date":"2019-04-16T16:55:55","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T15:55:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/education\/?p=88"},"modified":"2020-02-26T14:13:16","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T14:13:16","slug":"top-tips-for-parental-engagement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/education\/2019\/04\/16\/top-tips-for-parental-engagement\/","title":{"rendered":"Top tips for parental engagement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Parents' organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/connect.scot\/\">Connect<\/a> has been <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/connect_scot\">tweeting<\/a> top parental engagement tips for school staff, from Bath Lecturer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.bath.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/janet-goodall\">Dr Janet Goodall<\/a>, based on research in the field. Here they are in full:<\/p>\n<p>1. Parents love their children and want the best for them. You, too, want the best for all of the children you work with. That\u2019s the basis of any engagement strategy \u2013 you\u2019re all working for the same goal.<\/p>\n<p>2. Parents are at least as individual as the children in your class \u2013 what works for one child does not work for all, and the same is true of parents. To support them to engage with their children\u2019s learning, you need to get to know parents \u2013 what they want, what they need, and importantly, what they are already doing to support learning.<\/p>\n<p>3. What\u2019s really important is that parents engage with children\u2019s learning \u2013 not that parents come to school. Some parents may never be able to come to school, for a whole host of reasons but that doesn\u2019t mean they aren\u2019t or can\u2019t engage with learning, or that they do not need support to do so.<\/p>\n<p>4. Think about the barriers your parents face \u2013 these will be different for each cohort, each school, sometimes each family. Do you know the bus schedules that allow parents to get to school? Do you know if they are working shifts which makes it difficult for them to come to school? If they can\u2019t come, how else can you support them to support their children?<\/p>\n<p>5. Parents know their children well, but differently than school staff do. It\u2019s very useful to ask the simple question, \"What can you tell me about your child that will help me to help them learn?\"<\/p>\n<p>6. As educators, we know the difference between giving people information and having a dialogue with them. Schools are very good at giving parents information and that\u2019s important, but it\u2019s not the same as having a dialogue \u2013 and it\u2019s having those dialogues which will build the relationships that will support children\u2019s learning.<\/p>\n<p>7. Ensure your website is easy to navigate for someone coming to it for the first time \u2013 and for someone using a phone to look at it. Having pictures of the classrooms can be very useful (and reduce anxiety for both parents and pupils).<\/p>\n<p>8. Let parents know what children will be learning and give ideas about how to support that: for example, \u201cWe\u2019re looking at fractions \u2013 talk about dividing a pizza or cake\u201d; \u201cWe\u2019re looking at writing stories \u2013 talk to your child about what you like in a book or movie.\"<\/p>\n<p>9. Consider meeting parents outside of school, particularly for parents who find it difficult to come into school. A leisure centre, a local hall \u2013 wherever parents might be comfortable. Sometimes it\u2019s first steps like this that can lay the foundations of good relationships.<\/p>\n<p>10.
