As for many other walks of life, <strong>science faces uncertain times<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the UK Government\u2019s promise to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/safeguarding-funding-for-research-and-innovation\">safeguard existing EU Horizon 2020 funding<\/a> until the <strong>UK leaves the EU<\/strong>, there are concerns of leaner times ahead. Cold hard cash aside, the general zeitgeist is perhaps also concerning for a scientist. The Oxford English Dictionary\u2019s recognition of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.oxforddictionaries.com\/word-of-the-year\/word-of-the-year-2016\">post-truth<\/a>\u201d as a word, plus a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2016\/06\/06\/eu-referendum-who-needs-experts-when-weve-got-michael-gove\/\">famous person being quoted<\/a> as \u201chaving had enough of experts\u201d, has created something of an <strong>edgy mood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout all this uncertainty, <strong>I am personally buoyant about<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.oxforddictionaries.com\/definition\/science\">science<\/a>\u2019s prospects in\u00a02017<\/strong>. In the spirit of the year just passed, this is for an unashamedly emotional, subjective reason, all thanks to an <strong>unlikely union<\/strong> of people.<\/p>\n<p>First of the odd couple, the man behind Gnarlak the goblin in the film \u201cFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them\u201d \u2013 otherwise known as <strong>Ron Perlman<\/strong>. Secondly, the\u00a0new face of the\u00a0\u00a35 note \u2013 one <strong>Sir Winston Churchill.<\/strong> In an interview with The Big Issue,\u00a0Perlman spoke passionately about the <strong>value of arts<\/strong>, saying:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cI\u2019m with Churchill \u2013 we need to cherish culture. Pictures<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Churchill was indeed a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/richardlangworth.com\/arts\">champion of culture<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 particularly its value to society (though he is often misquoted in this regard).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThe arts are essential to any complete national life. The State owes it to itself to sustain and encourage them\u2026.Ill fares the race which fails to salute the arts with the reverence and delight which are their due.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sir Winston Churchill, Address to Royal Academy, 30 April 1938<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This staunch support of culture may have partly come from Churchill\u2019s own <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winstonchurchill.org\/publications\/chartwell-bulletin\/bulletin-74-aug-2014\/churchill-painting-exhibition-in-atlanta\">career in painting<\/a>. It was a <strong>source of great enjoyment and relief<\/strong> for him. As he himself said \"<em>If it weren't for painting I could not live. Like\u00a0its fellow\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liberal_arts_education\">branches of the liberal arts<\/a>, science, has its ups and downs. But like so many other aspects of human culture, it\u2019s hardwired into our existence. <strong>It\u2019s here to stay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At this point in time, we are perhaps more aware than before of the differences between oneself and other citizens. This is a reason, more than ever, <strong>to seek what unites<\/strong> - our \u201ccommonalities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And science DOES unite. To give an example - standing out amongst December\u2019s news articles about the Middle East was the arrival of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/aug\/30\/sesame-particle-accelerator-project-middle-east-jordan\">SESAME<\/a>. Not a puppet or seed, but <strong>the Middle East\u2019s new particle accelerator<\/strong>, the \u201cSynchrotron-Light for Experimental Science and Applications\u201d. Scientists from Iran, Pakistan, Israel, Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, the Palestinian Authority, Jordan and Bahrain will collaborate and do research in this new \u00a375m facility in Jordan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_260\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-260\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-260\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/engdes-student-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/128\/2017\/01\/SESAME-300x180.png\" alt=\"Open SESAME! Image courtesy of http:\/\/www.sesame.org.jo\/<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The prospect of lots of clever people from a troubled region working together to push the envelope of human scientific knowledge is <strong>something to celebrate<\/strong>. Likewise, in music, sport, literature etc., there is so much which humans enjoy and excel at which <strong>unites us across differences<\/strong>. At a time when there seem to be ever more ways to contrive conflict with others (voting preferences, cosmetic appearance, nationality, the list grows ever longer), let us always think first of the reality at hand - that quietly, so many of the things which inspire us<strong> are common to us all<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So as we look ahead to what 2017 may bring, rather than dwell on what frights us, <em>let\u2019s take a moment to remind ourselves of all that unites us<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A Happy New Year to you all.<\/p>\n<p><em>Also posted at https:\/\/verycivilengineer.wordpress.com\/<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Author: Alastair Marsh - It\u2019s scarcely worth repeating that 2016 was full of surprises \u2013 of which many people were happy, many not happy.
