{"id":756,"date":"2018-07-09T10:41:11","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T09:41:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/engdes-student-insights\/?p=756"},"modified":"2018-12-03T16:21:08","modified_gmt":"2018-12-03T16:21:08","slug":"my-research-project-at-polytechnique-montreal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/engdes-student-insights\/2018\/07\/09\/my-research-project-at-polytechnique-montreal\/","title":{"rendered":"My Research Project at Polytechnique Montreal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Author: Amy Clarke, 3rd Year MEng Chemical Engineering<\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p>This semester, I chose to complete my research project at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.polymtl.ca\/en\">Polytechnique Montreal<\/a> in Canada \u2013 and four months have flown by!<\/p>\n<p>When I and the other Bath students arrived in February, there was a few feet of snow on the ground, and temperatures were often below -15\u00b0C.\u00a0 Very quickly you learn to put on your thermals and layers!\u00a0 There were lots of winter activities to do, including ice skating on lakes, skiing, and the \u2018Montreal En Lumiere\u2019 winter lights festival.\u00a0 It was also fun to experience a hockey match while it was in season.<\/p>\n<p>There were plenty of other interns from across the world also completing projects at the university, from places like Australia, Ireland and Asia.\u00a0 The society for international students, PolyExplore, was also a great way of making friends, mainly from France.\u00a0 This society also offered great opportunities at subsidised student prices, such as a weekend trip to a chalet and spa in the Quebec mountains, and a weekend in Washington DC and Philadelphia.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0Montreal is very well located for travelling in North America - just a 50-minute flight away is New York City, and Boston is also nearby.\u00a0 Within Canada, we were able to travel to places such as Toronto, Niagara Falls, Quebec City, and Ottawa very easily.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-757\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/engdes-student-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/128\/2018\/07\/AC1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/engdes-student-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/128\/2018\/07\/AC1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/engdes-student-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/128\/2018\/07\/AC1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/engdes-student-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/128\/2018\/07\/AC1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/engdes-student-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/128\/2018\/07\/AC1-382x215.jpg 382w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/engdes-student-insights\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/128\/2018\/07\/AC1.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Montreal is a fantastic city for students.\u00a0 It is easy and safe to get around, and the combination of French and English cultures means each area of the city is unique and offers something different.\u00a0 It takes some time to get used to using French greetings, the cars driving on the wrong side of the road and the controversial bags of milk; but they are all part of the experience.\u00a0 With landmarks, shopping, nightlife, culture, and history, every person can enjoy the city.\u00a0 It is also easy to practise your French if you like, though as most people are bilingual, it is not problematic to speak English all of the time.<\/p>\n<p>Now the summer has arrived, it can be as warm as 30\u00b0C, and it feels like a different place to the winter.\u00a0 Summer festivals have started, and many of the open-air markets and rooftop terraces are open.\u00a0 This weekend is the Canadian Grand Prix, and the tulip festival is taking place at the Jardin Botanique.\u00a0 While it will be sad to leave soon, I am still grateful to have had such a wonderful opportunity in such a great country!\u00a0 I would highly recommend Montreal for anyone considering applying for the semester abroad.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Author: Amy Clarke, 3rd Year MEng Chemical Engineering This semester, I chose to complete my research project at Polytechnique Montreal in Canada \u2013 and four months have flown by!
