{"id":106,"date":"2016-09-16T09:27:41","date_gmt":"2016-09-16T08:27:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/exchange\/?p=106"},"modified":"2016-09-16T09:27:41","modified_gmt":"2016-09-16T08:27:41","slug":"department-gta-support-computer-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/exchange\/2016\/department-gta-support-computer-science\/","title":{"rendered":"Department GTA Support: Computer Science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This case study from Computer\u00a0Science, is part of a series providing short summaries of some of the different good practice models and approaches taken to department level support for graduate teaching assistants (GTAs).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Computer Science created a specific named role of <strong>\u201ctutor coordinator\u201d<\/strong> (tutor is the term used for GTAs in the department). The original coordinator then set up and ran the following plan of activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Department induction<\/strong> \u2013 to cover department level specifics, working alongside the central TIPs course.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regular meetings with all tutors<\/strong> \u2013 initially monthly, and well received by tutors, these meetings allowed for discussion and feedback on issues arising whilst teaching.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1-2-1 support<\/strong> offered to tutors<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invite to departmental teaching workshops<\/strong>\u2013 these are open to all generally, but are part of including and encouraging tutors within the teaching community of the department.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feedback collected from the tutors<\/strong> and ideas presented to the DLTQC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to ensure time is available for the above, in particular the regular meetings, the tutor coordinator role is being taken on by a member of staff who isn\u2019t a DoS. Current work for the future is focused on feedback to the tutors, including observations.<\/p>\n<p><em style=\"line-height: 1.5\">If you would like more information, contact the Directors of Studies\/Teaching in the department.
