Read <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/fed-academia\/2021\/01\/08\/from-here-to-there-reflections-on-a-semester-of-the-bathblend-part-1\/\">part 1<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/fed-academia\/2021\/01\/25\/from-here-to-there-reflections-on-a-semester-of-the-bathblend-part-2\/\">part 2<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3hibv-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3hibv-0-0\">Live Online Learning : even better than the \u2018real\u2019 thing<\/span><\/h3>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"84l2v\" data-offset-key=\"3l2ug-0-0\">I generally practice flipped teaching, where students spend the precious class time working in teams on meaningful learning activities.<\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"84l2v\" data-offset-key=\"3l2ug-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"84l2v\" data-offset-key=\"3l2ug-0-0\"><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"84l2v\" data-offset-key=\"3l2ug-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"84l2v\" data-offset-key=\"3l2ug-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3ev2p-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"3ev2p-0-0\">Flipped teaching is sometimes viewed with trepidation, the fear being that the pre-work required will overload students<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"3ev2p-1-0\">. I counter this <\/span>by:<\/div>\n<div data-offset-key=\"3ev2p-0-0\"><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>scaffolding the pre-learning (a rule of thumb is no more than 15 minutes of recorded content for each hour of contact time).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>using some of the class time for facilitated teamwork on summative assessments (student work that in a traditional setting would occur outside the classroom).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div data-offset-key=\"3ev2p-0-0\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"421ob-0-0\"><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"421ob-0-0\">Therefore<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"421ob-1-0\"> rather than adding to student work, the students do more work before class and less work after it<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"421ob-2-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cn8i1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cn8i1-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"ba1me-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"ba1me-0-0\">I found this model works quite well with students when it's explained <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"ba1me-1-0\">clearly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"ba1me-2-0\"> (my students want, and deserve, explanation and motivation for my pedagogical approach)<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"ba1me-3-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3bb5o-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3bb5o-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3goev-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3goev-0-0\">So how well does this work online? <\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9nqtg-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"9nqtg-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7bedh-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"7bedh-0-0\">Even during the emergency online teaching, students indicated that they valued the continuation of live online teaching<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"7bedh-1-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"cnmds-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"cnmds-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b5h01-0-0\"><em><span class=\"veryhardreadability\">\u201c\u2026 continued live lectures after lock-down \u2026 was very valuable for students like me who want to keep interactive lecturers and other students<\/span>.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"6r9or-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"6r9or-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"2aemn-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"2aemn-0-0\">This was particularly striking since the time of class (3-6pm) was now rather inconvenient to some of my students who were now in a different time zone<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"2aemn-1-0\">. Even those now working late at night continued to take part and engage in class. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7a6kd-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7a6kd-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"f6p82-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"f6p82-0-0\">The use of breakout rooms in some cases worked better than their <\/span><\/span><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"f6p82-1-0\">previously<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"f6p82-2-0\"> cramped classroom environment.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"qqn8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"qqn8-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_171\" public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"863u1-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"863u1-0-0\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"8g9t6-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"8g9t6-0-0\">Moving into the new academic year (and with a more sociable time zone arrangement) I was expecting the sessions to be an important part of my teaching<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"8g9t6-1-0\">. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"aba2s-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"aba2s-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"9sf6-0-0\"><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9sf6-0-0\">My expectations <\/span><\/span><span class=\"passivevoice\"><span data-offset-key=\"9sf6-1-0\">were exceeded<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9sf6-2-0\"> \u2013 I was <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"9sf6-3-0\">pleasantly<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"9sf6-4-0\"> surprised to find that even at the end of the semester, attendance was at 100%<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"9sf6-5-0\">. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"91iq6-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"91iq6-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"c6hq2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"c6hq2-0-0\">Indeed, I did not achieve this in my on campus teaching last year, nor even this year.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"3bbp8-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"3bbp8-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"16sbr-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"16sbr-0-0\">In a typical lecture theatre it is hard to get input from anyone further back than the first few rows, but the engagement of all students during a live online session was <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"16sbr-1-0\">really<\/span><\/span><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"16sbr-2-0\"> impressive<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"16sbr-3-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b459t-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b459t-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"acf7p-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"acf7p-0-0\">The fact that students can share their initial thoughts in the privacy of a breakout room does seem to build confidence as reflected in our end of semester student feedback :<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"mc26-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"mc26-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"f78kp-0-0\"><em><span class=\"hardreadability\">\u201cBreakout Rooms: Allows you to mix with others and gives an opportunity for people to get comfortable working together<\/span>.\u201d<\/em><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"b9mn0-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"b9mn0-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5uuaq-0-0\"><span class=\"complexword\"><span data-offset-key=\"5uuaq-0-0\">All of<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"5uuaq-1-0\"> which suggests that the convenience and inclusiveness of online sessions is something I would want to keep in my regular teaching<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"5uuaq-2-0\">. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"5bhh2-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5bhh2-0-0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"84l2v\" data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-0-0\"><span class=\"veryhardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-0-0\">The one caveat is to protect against digital exclusion (for example, students with connectivity issues, or with lower specification IT kit)<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-1-0\">.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-2-0\"> To help this, I record all my sessions (except the breakout rooms) and am working on improving the captioning<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-3-0\">. <\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-4-0\">\u00a0Students <\/span><\/span><span class=\"adverb\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-5-0\">really<\/span><\/span><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-6-0\"> value breakout rooms for private team discussions, and I am going to reflect on the best tool for this (eg <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/microsoft-365\/microsoft-teams\/group-chat-software\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-7-0\">Teams<\/span><\/a><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-8-0\">, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/zoom.us\/\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-9-0\">Zoom<\/span><\/a><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-10-0\">, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gather.town\/\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-11-0\">GatherTown<\/span><\/a><span class=\"hardreadability\"><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-12-0\">)<\/span><\/span><span data-offset-key=\"bjd1s-13-0\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div
