{"id":276,"date":"2016-11-22T13:13:59","date_gmt":"2016-11-22T13:13:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/fedstaff\/?p=276"},"modified":"2016-11-22T13:35:05","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T13:35:05","slug":"tel-event-3-web-conferencing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/fedstaff\/2016\/11\/22\/tel-event-3-web-conferencing\/","title":{"rendered":"TEL Event #3 - Web conferencing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our third event saw Dr John Orr describe how he and his colleague, Dr Saverio Spadea, used a web conferencing tool called Adobe Connect to deliver a successful, blended workshop \u2013 with 20 participants on campus and another 50 online.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Their workshop included:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4 presentations, 2 presenters on campus, 1 in the USA and 1 in Canada<\/li>\n<li>A lab demonstration via webcam in 6E lab<\/li>\n<li>Online Q&amp;A using the web chat tool<\/li>\n<li>Face-to-face Q&amp;A using a mic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>A number of tips were identified for anyone delivering this kind of online event:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Time your event to take account of different time zones where possible<\/li>\n<li>Set defaults to mute\/no video for participants<\/li>\n<li>Use a USB web cam which can be moved around easily<\/li>\n<li>Keep to strict timescales for remote presenters \u2013 avoids having to interrupt them to get them to stop<\/li>\n<li>Use a sign-up form to judge how many people may watch online \u2013 you may need to \u00a0ask for extra seats for your virtual room<\/li>\n<li>Have a contingency in place in case one of the remote presenters hits a technical snag<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" style=\"float: left;margin: 0 0.6em 0.3em 0\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/fedstaff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2016\/11\/web_conference.jpg\" alt=\"Image: web conference icon.\" width=\"135\" height=\"103\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/learningandteaching\/e-learning\/core-tech\/web-conferencing.html\" target=\"_blank\">Adobe Connect<\/a> is software which allows groups of people to meet virtually using video, text chat or audio.\u00a0 It lets people collaborate through the use of shared presentations, shared files or shared desktops.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">It also provides opportunities for interaction via a series of simple tools, such as hands-up and polling.\u00a0 It gets used for a variety of purposes when the participants can\u2019t all meet in person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Example uses are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Online events such as workshops, conferences or meetings<\/li>\n<li>Broadcasting presentations or lectures to students<\/li>\n<li>Online tutorials with students<\/li>\n<li>Group work \u2013 online collaboration between students<\/li>\n<li>Revision or exam preparation sessions for students<\/li>\n<li>Student presentations for formative or summative assessment<\/li>\n<li>Guest speaker presentations<\/li>\n<li>Online demonstrations via desktop or video<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thanks to Marie Salter from the e-learning team who presented an overview of Adobe Connect and the process for setting up and accessing a \u2018virtual room\u2019.\u00a0 If you\u2019re interesting in finding out more you can contact <a href=\"mailto:e-learning@bath.ac.uk\">e-learning@bath.ac.uk<\/a> for details on getting set up.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366\"><strong>Want to know more?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<table style=\"padding: 1 2 1 2\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Link<\/th>\n<th align=\"left\">Details<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/uniofbath.cloud.panopto.eu\/Panopto\/Pages\/Viewer.aspx?id=00adeaa0-bef7-443c-bbba-7ab4cdb8a8dc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"https:\/\/uniofbath.cloud.panopto.eu\/Panopto\/Pages\/Viewer.aspx?id=00adeaa0-bef7-443c-bbba-7ab4cdb8a8dc \"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-163\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/fedstaff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/109\/2016\/06\/hand_click_bw-150x150.png\" alt=\"Image Designed by Freepik\" width=\"35\" height=\"41\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td>For tips on setting up this kind of event watch the video recording of John describing how they did it.
