A lecturer can add feedback to a student submission and send it back to the whole group \u2013 highlighting correct answers or pointing out common mistakes or points of interest.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a demonstration of how the software looks in action.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UniDoodle\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ttEQEJuxS_o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can read a fuller description of the software, and the benefits of using it, in this <a href=\"http:\/\/ims.teachingandlearning.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/ExpertGuideUnidoodle.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Expert Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h1>Why would you use it?<\/h1>\n<p>This software is most useful when lecturers want to check understanding (formative assessment) but want students to demonstrate this through sketching.<\/p>\n<p>Some examples could be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Annotating images to solve a problem or complete an answer<\/li>\n<li>Annotating images to show relationships between concepts<\/li>\n<li>Annotating images to consider \u2018what if\u2019 scenarios<\/li>\n<li>Labelling images to recall previous knowledge<\/li>\n<li>Drawing or sketching to illustrate an answer<\/li>\n<li>Highlighting errors or omissions on existing content to demonstrate understanding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In many cases it's likely that lecturers would want all students to participate in answering questions.\u00a0 Another option, particularly helpful if not all students come to class with a touchscreen device, would be to have a device that can be passed around the class.\u00a0 In this way individuals could participate, without having to come to the board at the front of the class.<\/p>\n<p>An example of how UniDoodle has been used at Maynooth University can be viewed in this video presentation.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"On the Use of the UniDoodle Student Response System in a First Year Engineering Classroom\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CnIXpDenbgA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h1>How could you use it?<\/h1>\n<p>There are many ways to use this tool, but here is one example question for students in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Computational Intelligence), provided by Dr Ben Metcalfe. You can read an evaluation of its use in this paper (see link below),\u00a0 written by the team who created the software for their own teaching at Maynooth University.<\/p>\n<p>McLoone, S.C., Kelly, C. An evaluation of the UniDoodle student response system in a first year systems and control module. <\/em>[Online] Signals and Systems Conference (ISSC), 2017 28th Irish (Accessed at <a href=\"http:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/7983610\/\">http:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/7983610\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The evaluation concludes that staff and students found the software easy to use (always a good starting point) but both groups also found it to be beneficial to learning.\u00a0 In particular, student assessment results were noticeably higher, which students attributed to having to focus more during lectures.
