What better time to reflect on the recent achievements of our female staff and students in the Faculty.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recognising outstanding contributions to STEM<br \/>\n<\/strong>The 2019 FDM Everywoman in Tech Awards took place on Wednesday 6 March, where two of our academics \u2013 Dr Apala Majumdar from the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Dr Adelina Ilie from the Department of Physics \u2013 were both nominated for the Academic Award.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/national-stem-award-success-for-bath-mathematician\/\">Dr Apala Majumdar won the Academic category<\/a>\u00a0for her outstanding contribution to technology and science through her work into liquid crystals and its potential to make a significant long-term impact in STEM. Dr Majumbar is also a member of editorial board of Mathematics &amp; Mechanics of Solids, a member of Global Challenges Research Funding Strategic Advisory Group, and a member of ICMS (International Centre for Mathematical Sciences) programme committee.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/professor-carole-mundell-listed-in-100-most-influential-women-in-the-west\/\">Professor Carole Mundell, Department of Physics, was listed in 100 most influential women in the West<\/a> and recently appointed as the Chief Scientific Advisor at the FCO.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/emerging-scholar-award-for-bath-graduate\/\">Emerging scholar award<\/a> was presented to Daniela De Angeli (Computer Science) by the Inclusive Museum Conference.\u00a0 The emerging scholar awards are given to outstanding graduate students or early career academics who have an active academic interest in museum-related research, with a focus on inclusivity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/people.bath.ac.uk\/as2413\/\">Dr Asel Sartbaeva<\/a> is one of the Royal Society of Chemistry\u2019s 175 faces of Chemistry. \u00a0She also won the IChemE\u00a0Hanson Medal 2018\/19.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.bath.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/charareh-pourzand\/\">Dr Charareh Pourzand<\/a>- has been invited as a world expert by the international BioIron Society organisers to give a full workshop and an invited lecture in the\u00a0<strong>2019 EMBL Course<\/strong>\u00a0on\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.embl.de\/training\/events\/2019\/BIR19-02\/index.html\">Techniques for Studying Iron in Health and Disease<\/a><\/strong>, which will take place from 2 - 4 May 2019 at EMBL Heidelberg, Germany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Major fellowships<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In March 2018, Dr C\u00e9cile Mailler, from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/cecile-mailler-awarded-epsrc-applied-probability-fellowship\/\">awarded an applied probability fellowship by EPSRC.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr Selene Fernandez-Valverde <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/selene-fernandez-valverde-joins-the-milner-centre-as-royal-society-research-fellow\/\">joined the Milner Centre for Evolution<\/a> as a Royal Society Research Fellow. She was recently awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forwomeninscience.com\/en\/rising_talents\">L\u2019Or\u00e9al-UNESCO For Women in Science International Rising Talents Award.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.bath.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/banafshe-larijani\">Professor Banafshe Larijani<\/a> was awarded the Guy-Newton Fellowship 2018 at the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at the University of Oxford. She was recently appointed by the Department of Pharmacy &amp; Pharmacology as Professor of Biophysics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/research-centres\/centre-for-therapeutic-innovation\/\">Director of the Centre for Therapeutic Innovation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.bath.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/sofia-pascu\">Professor Sofia Pascu<\/a>, (Department of Chemistry),\u00a0currently holds a ERC Fellowship (Consolidator grant).<\/p>\n<p>Dr Ruth Webster (Department of Chemistry),\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/epsrc.ukri.org\/about\/people\/ruthwebster\/\">holds an EPSRC Fellowship.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.bath.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/sara-dale\">Dr Sara Dale<\/a> (Department of Physics) is a Royal Society Research Fellow.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.bath.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/vicky-hunt\">Dr Vicky Hunt<\/a> (Department of Biology &amp; Biochemistry) holds a Welcome Trust Henry Dale Fellowship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Internal University prizes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Lauren Cowely (Biology &amp; Biochemistry), Dr Elizaveta Suturina (Chemistry), Dr Sarah Penington (Mathematics), Dr Kristina Rusimova (Physics)\u00a0 and Dr Jane Younger (Biology &amp;Biochemistry) were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/university-of-bath-prize-fellowships-for-2018\/\">awarded a Prize Fellowship for 2018.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Vice-Chancellor\u2019s Awards for Public Engagement with Research - Bethan Charles, a PhD student from the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/vc-awards-put-public-engagement-with-research-centre-stage\/\">won this year\u2019s Postgraduate Prize<\/a> for her research on perovskites and their potential to transform solar energy generation.<\/p>\n<p>The University\u2019s Three Minute Thesis Final took place in June, where eight doctoral students competed against the clock by presenting their entire thesis in just three minutes. Biology PhD student, Kay Fountain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/three-minute-thesis-3mt-final-2018\/\">won first prize<\/a> for her presentation \u2018CSI and The Mystery of the Little Blue Cells\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Chancellor\u2019s Prize, which is awarded on an annual basis to the best final year undergraduate student, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/chancellors-prize-winner-2018\/\">won by Hannah Morris<\/a>, a recent maths graduate, for her excellent academic results and high year abroad dissertation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Other highlights\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Karen Edler<\/strong> (Chemistry) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/growing-number-of-female-professors-at-bath\/\">talks about her journey to professoriate level<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr Charlotte Dodson<\/strong>, a lecturer in Pharmacy and Pharmacology, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/vcs-research-day-2019\/\">showcased her work<\/a> at the VC\u2019s Research Day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On International Women\u2019s Day<\/strong> itself, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/326598864649867\/\">join our quiz night<\/a> organised by Women in Technology, Network of Women in Physics, Women in Science and Women in Maths. It will take place at 6pm in the Wolfson Theatre on 8 March.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/researchportal.bath.ac.uk\/en\/persons\/charareh-pourzand\/\"><strong>BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium<\/strong><\/a> - takes place on Wednesday 17 April at the University of Salford. Students will have the opportunity to present their work on a poster and can win cash prizes provided by industry sponsors. In 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/best-year-yet-for-computer-science-students-at-lovelace-colloquium\/\">Bath students picked up prizes in nearly every category<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, to date, all of our departments have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/corporate-information\/athena-swan-submissions\/\">received a Silver or Bronze Athena SWAN award<\/a>, recognising the work being done for gender equality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Friday 8 March is International Women\u2019s Day and this year\u2019s campaign theme is #BalanceforBetter.
