{"id":1510,"date":"2014-09-01T14:00:02","date_gmt":"2014-09-01T14:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/healthresearch\/?p=1510"},"modified":"2014-09-16T13:12:21","modified_gmt":"2014-09-16T13:12:21","slug":"app-finds-design-solutions-to-everyday-problems-for-people-with-disabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/healthresearch\/2014\/09\/01\/app-finds-design-solutions-to-everyday-problems-for-people-with-disabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"App finds design solutions to everyday problems for people with disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The success of an innovative design app competition, organised through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/pain\/\">Bath Centre for Pain Research<\/a>, is cited in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/336428\/S22_Report_2013-14.pdf\">Parliamentary Report<\/a> on advances into assistive technology that could help the elderly and people living with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Countering the rise in chronic conditions, coupled with the push towards greater independent living for these groups, researchers from the University of Bath's <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/health\/\">Department for Health<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/health\/brd\">Bath Research &amp; Development<\/a> launched the \u2018ifOnly\u2019 crowdsourcing app to encourage these populations to share the everyday problems they face.<\/p>\n<p>Through the app, users recorded, uploaded and posted videos to demonstrate a variety of challenges experienced; from opening cans to making a cup of tea. Under the premise of \u2018if only I could\u2026\u2019 the competition set out to bring together a user community with new designers each challenged to come up with innovative solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of the project, over 100 \u2018ifOnly\u2019 videos were uploaded charting a variety of challenges and attracting over 22,000 views via YouTube. In tandem, a community of interest grew via an ifOnly webpage displaying films and providing a forum for potential design collaborators.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the competition, designs were considered by a panel of stakeholders including representatives from the NHS, social care, creative industries and the third sector as well as members of the public.<\/p>\n<p>The overall winner of the competition, announced in May, was student Simon Lyons of Loughborough University whose design found a simple cutting tool to help elderly people open packets, jars and bottles without the risk of injury.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The success of an innovative design app competition, organised through the Bath Centre for Pain Research, is cited in a recent Parliamentary Report on advances into assistive technology that could help the elderly and people living with disabilities.
