{"id":210,"date":"2010-06-08T16:57:27","date_gmt":"2010-06-08T15:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/healthresearch\/?p=210"},"modified":"2010-06-08T16:57:27","modified_gmt":"2010-06-08T15:57:27","slug":"smart-systems-for-rehabilitation-and-assisted-living","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/healthresearch\/2010\/06\/08\/smart-systems-for-rehabilitation-and-assisted-living\/","title":{"rendered":"Smart systems for rehabilitation and assisted living"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a title=\"Professor Christopher Eccleston\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/health\/pain\/Eccleston.html\" target=\"_blank\">Professor Eccleston <\/a>(Director of <a title=\"BCPR\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/health\/pain\" target=\"_blank\">BCPR<\/a>) has recently been awarded with an <a title=\"EPSRC\" href=\"http:\/\/www.epsrc.ac.uk\/pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">EPSRC<\/a> <a title=\"ESPRC KTA\" href=\"http:\/\/www.epsrc.ac.uk\/plans\/exploit\/Pages\/knowledgetransfer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Knowledge Transfer Award<\/a>, to develop innovative ways to accelerate the translation of research outputs in to business opportunities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In partnership with the <a title=\"BIME\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/bime\" target=\"_blank\">Bath Institute for Medical Engineering (BIME)<\/a>, <strong>Smart systems for rehabilitation and assisted living<\/strong> will provide individualised support for users and carers to manage their condition. They will be suitable for the self funded, mainstream market, and are more likely to provide a sustainable long term model of delivery.<a href=\"http:\/\/bathblogs.wpengine.com\/healthresearch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2010\/06\/SMART-pic-small.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-217\" src=\"http:\/\/bathblogs.wpengine.com\/healthresearch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2010\/06\/SMART-pic-small-300x215.jpg\" alt=\"SMART pic\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/healthresearch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2010\/06\/SMART-pic-small-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/healthresearch\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/58\/2010\/06\/SMART-pic-small.jpg 906w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/healthresearch\/files\/\/www\/vhosts\/bathblogs\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/621\/files\/2010\/06\/SMART-pic1.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The aim of this award is to take forward the outputs of <a title=\"Professor Eccleston previous awards\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/health\/pain\/CurrentResearch.html\" target=\"_blank\">previous awards led by Professor Eccleston <\/a>(<em>SMART 1, SMART 2 and KT<\/em>) and <a title=\"Smart Homes BIME\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/bime\/projects\/dc_projects.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Smart Homes<\/a> work from BIME in to telehealth and telecare for those with chronic conditions, which enable them to self manage at home.<\/p>\n<p>Although self care and self management are being promoted as the way forward, there is little analysis in to their integration in to the home; it assumes a medical model of health intervention, where a health professional is responsible for monitoring - unlikely to be sustainable in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>This project will establish long partnerships with three key organisations working in this area: <a title=\"BIME\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/bime\/\" target=\"_blank\">BIME<\/a>, the <a title=\"BIRT\" href=\"http:\/\/www.birt.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust (BIRT)<\/a> - one of the leading independent providers for people with acquired brain injury, and <a title=\"Ivory Egg\" href=\"http:\/\/ivoryegg.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ivory Egg<\/a>, the leading UK supplier of home automation products using the European wide open KNX architecture.
