Today's world is digital,\u00a0and\u00a0this\u00a0shapes\u00a0how\u00a0we\u00a0live, work, and connect. New digital technologies bring extraordinary opportunities for growth, innovation, and prosperity. But they also create risks and threats, and the human and social challenges they present are often the most difficult to solve.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Alongside my\u00a0colleague<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Professor Adam\u00a0Joinson, I lead the Institute for Digital Security & Behaviour at the University of Bath. We are now into our second year, and this blog is our way of\u00a0opening up\u00a0our work\u00a0and\u00a0sharing what\u00a0we're\u00a0learning, what\u00a0we're\u00a0debating, and why we believe a people-centred approach to digital security matters now more than ever.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Bath? Why Behavioural Science?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The University of Bath was founded on a deceptively simple idea: that to make something thrive, you must first\u00a0truly understand\u00a0its nature. That philosophy shapes everything we do at the Institute.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Most conversations about digital security focus on the technical side, such as firewalls, encryption and threat detection. These matter enormously. But the hardest problems in digital security aren't solely technical. They're human.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why do people fall for phishing emails, even when they know they\u00a0shouldn't? Why are certain communities more vulnerable to disinformation? How do abusers exploit smart home devices to control their partners? Why do employees make decisions at work that put their organisations at risk? These are questions that no software patch can answer. They need behavioural and social science. They need the kind of rigorous, people-centred research that we do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That is what makes the Institute for Digital Security & Behaviour distinctive. We put people at the heart of digital security <\/span>and at the starting point of our research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0challenges\u00a0are\u00a0real, and\u00a0they\u00a0are\u00a0growing<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The digital threats people face today are not abstract. The war in Ukraine shows how rapidly cyber threat actors can scale their attacks on critical institutions. Elections in democracies around the world are being undermined by coordinated disinformation campaigns. Terrorist groups are using social media to spread hate and recruit members. Children are being targeted and exploited online. And for many women and girls, smart devices in their own homes have become tools of control and abuse.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are not niche security issues. They are some of the defining social challenges of our time, and they will not be solved by technology alone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What this blog is for<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the coming months, we'll be sharing thinking from across the Institute community on the research we're doing, the questions we're grappling with, and what we believe needs to change in policy, in regulation, and in how digital technologies are designed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our first posts reflect the breadth of that work: one explores why responsible AI governance is essential if we are to realise AI's benefits safely and ethically, while another examines how social media platforms shape political debate and what this means for democracy and public trust.<\/p>\n

Some posts will be deliberately broad, written for anyone who wants to understand the digital world better. Others will be aimed at specific audiences, including policymakers, industry leaders and researchers, with direct and practical implications for their work.<\/p>\n
