This month aims to <em>\u201ccommemorate, mark and celebrate South Asian cultures, histories, and communities\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>SAHM runs annually from 18 July to 17<sup>th<\/sup> August. This date was chosen as it marks the date of the Indian Independence Act 1947, as well as largely coinciding with the South Asian month of Saravan\/Sawan. The theme for 2025 is \u2018Roots to Routes\u2019, inviting us to explore how our histories (roots) shape our journeys (routes) \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/southasianheritage.org.uk\/south-asian-heritage-month\/2025-sahm-theme\/\">find out more on the South Asian Heritage Month website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Which countries make up South Asia?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Afghanistan<\/li>\n<li>Bangladesh<\/li>\n<li>Bhutan<\/li>\n<li>India<\/li>\n<li>The Maldives<\/li>\n<li>Nepal<\/li>\n<li>Pakistan<\/li>\n<li>Sri Lanka<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Why is it important to mark this month?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each of the countries listed above have been impacted significantly by Britain and the British Empire. Today 1 in 14 people in the British population are of South Asian Heritage. It is important to acknowledge the impact South Asian culture has made in Britain, and this month gives a platform for South Asian people to share their stories, celebrate their history, and reflect on the past.<\/p>\n<p>South Asian Heritage Month creates space to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Acknowledge historical realities<\/strong>, including migration, resistance, and resilience.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Celebrate cultural contributions<\/strong> \u2013 from language, literature, food, and fashion to science, academia, and public life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amplify stories and voices<\/strong> of South Asian people to deepen understanding, belonging, and solidarity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Teslim Bukoye, Race Equality Charter (REC) Lead:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>South Asian Heritage Month is a powerful opportunity to reflect, recognise and celebrate the richness of South Asian cultures, histories, and communities both within the UK and across our university. At Bath, we honour the contributions of colleagues, students and alumni of South Asian heritage who continue to shape our institution and society at large. This year\u2019s theme, <em>\u2018Roots to Routes\u2019,<\/em> invites us to not only acknowledge our shared histories, shaped by colonial legacies, but also to embrace the journeys, resilience and creativity that define our present and future.
