{"id":518,"date":"2021-02-25T11:20:51","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T11:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/?p=518"},"modified":"2021-02-26T10:21:11","modified_gmt":"2021-02-26T10:21:11","slug":"lgbt-history-month-25-28-allies-the-uncompromising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/2021\/02\/25\/lgbt-history-month-25-28-allies-the-uncompromising\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBT+ History Month 25\/28: Allies: The Uncompromising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It goes without saying that LGBTQ+ people are amazing.\u00a0 We are.\u00a0 I\u2019ve decided as such and my word is gospel at this point.\u00a0 That being said, I wouldn\u2019t be allowed to say that if it were not for some of the bravest people out there who have made an impact on LGBTQ+ rights and who just happen to not be LGBTQ+ themselves.\u00a0 These people are allies.<\/p>\n<p>Allies are individuals who support and advocate the rights and equalities of others who are marginalised and discriminated against in society.\u00a0\u00a0 In this instance, heterosexual (straight) people who advocate the rights of LGBTQ+ people.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s day 25 of LGBTQ+ History Month and the last day of the week-long Allies Arc in the Queeroes series.\u00a0 To date we\u2019ve looked at law reformers, entertainers, and sports professionals.\u00a0 8 amazing men and women who care deeply about LGBTQ+ issues and raise public attention to the crisis and concerns of our community.<\/p>\n<p>In today\u2019s issue, I had to think very deeply about who it should be.\u00a0 Do I bring forth the classic Cher or Dolly or Bette?\u00a0 Do I welcome Jay Z, Donald Glover or Garth Brooks to the stage?\u00a0 Or do I keep it obvious but for an unobvious reason?<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s uncompromising Queero and mother of all allies is none other than Michelle Visage.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-519\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/MichelleVisage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"556\" height=\"835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/MichelleVisage.jpg 556w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/MichelleVisage-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/MichelleVisage-143x215.jpg 143w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Michelle Lynn Shupack was born on September 20th, 1968.\u00a0 She was put up for adoption and would grow up in New Jersey in a loving and encouraging household.\u00a0 She graduated from High School in 1986 and later moved to New York to study at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.\u00a0 It was during this time that her LGBTQ+ experiences began.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>\"I moved to New York City and I didn't know a soul. The people that took me in was the gay community. They never questioned the colour of my skin, or questioned the colour of my hair, my size; am I too fat, too skinny, too tall, too short.\u00a0 It was \u2018You are welcome. We love you for you\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Michelle became involved with the ball scene, an LGBTQ+ subculture whereby attendees can watch and participate in events for prizes.\u00a0 Events include dance, fashion, make up, gender illusion and so on.<\/p>\n<p>She learnt music and fashion from the community and would even perform for the crowds, touring the New York club circuit.\u00a0 After being given the nickname \u2018cara\u2019 (Spanish for face), people kept pronouncing it car-uh or \u2018kera\u2019, so she chose the surname Visage (French for face) instead.\u00a0 And for the record, it\u2019s pronounced VIZ-ARGE not VIZ-IGE.<\/p>\n<p>During this time her music career began with the all girl hip-hop group Seduction where she achieved numerous hits and great success before their split in 1991.\u00a0 She followed this with collaborations with TKA and The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M., the latter of which saw her <em>It's Gonna Be a Lovely Day<\/em> storm the charts after being used in Whitney Houston\u2019s hit film The Bodyguard.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-522\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/SeductionSoulSystem.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/SeductionSoulSystem.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/SeductionSoulSystem-300x111.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/SeductionSoulSystem-768x285.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/SeductionSoulSystem-579x215.jpg 579w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Visage\u2019s 90s career continued with success as a co-host with best friend RuPaul Charles on both The RuPaul Show and a morning radio show which continued into the early 00s.<\/p>\n<p>Visage would then go on to her biggest career defining moment to date as a permanent judge on RuPaul\u2019s Drag race.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-520\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/RPDR.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"835\" height=\"556\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/RPDR.jpg 835w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/RPDR-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/RPDR-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/RPDR-323x215.jpg 323w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 835px) 100vw, 835px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center\">Visage with other Queero Kacey Musgraves, host Rupaul and fellow judge Ross Matthews<\/h5>\n<p>Since then, millions of people have to come to know her name and her work and her love, support, encouragement, and fight for the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n<p>As her fame grew, other outlets wanted her on their shows which lead to appearances on Big Brother, Ireland\u2019s Got Talent and YouTube comedy series The Most Popular Girls in School.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019 she was a celebrity dancer on Strictly Come Dancing with partner Giovanni Pernice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/g9_LFs1tqLA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s safe to say that Visage\u2019s time in the spotlight is a varied and colourful one.\u00a0 But what\u2019s most important to note is that she has never really made it all about her.\u00a0 The Blackpool week dance itself (see above video) was even dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community.\u00a0 She literally puts us first!<\/p>\n<p>Using her celebrity-entertainer platform, Visage has championed LGBTQ+ right for decades.\u00a0 She doesn\u2019t just hold the title of ally and sit still, she lives and breathes the culture and pushes it further alongside the community.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s TV, radio, her own book, or the press, she has defended the community time and again and been a strong advocate for equal rights.\u00a0 She tells our stories, the good and the bad, and puts the community in the spotlight.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-523\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/DIVARULES.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1743\" height=\"2475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/DIVARULES.jpg 1743w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/DIVARULES-211x300.jpg 211w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/DIVARULES-721x1024.jpg 721w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/DIVARULES-768x1091.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/DIVARULES-1082x1536.jpg 1082w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/DIVARULES-1442x2048.jpg 1442w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/155\/2021\/02\/DIVARULES-151x215.jpg 151w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1743px) 100vw, 1743px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As the mother of a gay daughter, Visage says that she wants there to be a happier, safer world for her child, and others, and will do everything she can to achieve that, and she does.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we love that, and of course we love her relationship with the community and everything she does in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality and freedom.\u00a0 All this and more is why she is a Queero.<\/p>\n<p>But what about the other stuff?\u00a0 What about the things that go unrecognised?\u00a0 The reason why she is labelled the mother of all allies?\u00a0 Did you know she was once involved with Scientology, a prolifically homophobic organisation?<\/p>\n<p>In an interview held on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ora.tv\/larrykingnow\/2019\/8\/5\/leah-remini-on-scientology-social-media-raising-girls-in-hollywood\"><strong>Larry King Now<\/strong><\/a>, Visage and best friend, actress and producer Leah Remini discussed their past with the infamously homophobic and transphobic Church of Scientology and how Remini, being involved from childhood, invited Michelle to check things out and see if it was for her.<\/p>\n<p>Visage was impressed with the philosophy and the potential of a higher self.\u00a0 Her interests grew and she began her journey as a Scientologist.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kOSDgWCILUI?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She attended meetings and would study the manifesto and information books.\u00a0 She was learning the lifestyle and was intrigued by the teachings on the higher self.\u00a0 All seemed to fit with what she was seeking in her spirituality until one day she read something that completely contradicted her own personal beliefs around homosexuality (watch from 4:11) and with that she walked away.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation itself is highly renowned for their relentless attack on people who speak out against the church or leave.\u00a0 \u00a0And when I say \u2018attack\u2019 I mean persistent abuse, blacklisting, shunning, smear campaigning and destroying the lives of individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Let me rephrase that; Michelle Visage risked her personal life and wellbeing for the sake of the LGBTQ+ community because she was having none of it, and as an ally that is quite simply one of the bravest things one can do.<\/p>\n<p>Though she does not use her platform to vocally denounce Scientology, she will not give her time and energy to those that do.\u00a0 If the subject is brought up, she will discuss her experience and leave it at that.\u00a0 Instead she uses her energy to promote love and allyship.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center;
