{"id":704,"date":"2024-01-17T12:40:50","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T12:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/?p=704"},"modified":"2024-02-06T21:49:56","modified_gmt":"2024-02-06T21:49:56","slug":"lgbtq-history-month-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/kaleidoscope\/2024\/01\/17\/lgbtq-history-month-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"LGBTQ+ History Month 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The University of Bath's Kaleidoscope Staff and PGR group are proud to present a programme of activities for LGBTQ+ History Month 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday 6 February \u2013 Free cupcakes!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>12.15-1.15pm<\/p>\n<p>(All students and staff)<\/p>\n<p>Drop by our stall outside the Library on the Parade to answer a question on LGBTQ+ history and get your free cupcake.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday 12 February \u2013 Beckford's Tower Talk by Dr Amy Frost (Bath Preservation Trust)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5.15-6.15pm<\/p>\n<p>(All students and staff)<\/p>\n<p>Location: 4 West 1.2<\/p>\n<p>The story of William Beckford, who created Beckford\u2019s Tower in 1827, is a fascinating but challenging one.\u00a0 \u00a0Beckford\u2019s wealth was generated by the transatlantic slave trade and his claiming in ownership of enslaved people.\u00a0 It enabled his creativity, but also gave him power that he used to abuse the lives of others. \u00a0Beckford is also seen by many as a key figure in the Queer history of the Georgian period in Britain. This talk will explore the complexities of Beckford\u2019s story and how the team at Beckford\u2019s Tower are trying to tell them at the museum when it reopens in spring this year.<\/p>\n<p><em>Please be aware that some of the stories this talk explores cover distressing subjects including abuse, exploitation and enslavement. We\u00ad have tried to tackle these sensitively but know they may trigger strong emotional responses.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr Amy Frost is the Senior Curator of Bath Preservation Trust.\u00a0 An architectural historian, she specialises in British architecture of the eighteenth and early nineteenth century and is a leading expert on the life of William Beckford (1760-1844).\u00a0 Amy is a graduate of Bath University and frequently lectures on architectural history and theory in the Department of Architecture &amp; Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Brewer is the Activities Officer on the Beckford\u2019s Tower \u2018Our Tower\u2019 project.
