{"id":183,"date":"2016-07-06T11:14:01","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T10:14:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/research-marketing\/?p=183"},"modified":"2017-11-01T13:58:49","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T13:58:49","slug":"a-bumper-month-in-the-conversation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/knowledge-exchange-and-research-impact\/2016\/07\/06\/a-bumper-month-in-the-conversation\/","title":{"rendered":"A bumper month in The Conversation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>From Brexit to (Gareth) Bale, dinosaurs to social death, June was our busiest month ever for <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/uk\"><em>The Conversation<\/em><\/a> both in terms of published articles and readership.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the one month alone, nearly three quarters of a million people around the world read content authored by our academics and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/institutions\/university-of-bath\">14 new articles<\/a> \u2013 roughly one every other day \u2013 were published.<\/p>\n<h2>Dinosaur spike<\/h2>\n<p>June\u2019s spike in traffic was driven to a large extent\u00a0by one article, published towards the end of the month, by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/bio-sci\/contacts\/academics\/nick_longrich\/\">Dr Nick Longrich<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/projects\/the-milner-centre-for-evolution\/\">Milner Centre for Evolution<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/bio-sci\/\">Department of Biology &amp; Biochemistry<\/a>) which has already become our most read article ever, having been seen\u00a0by 383,410 people.<\/p>\n<p>How and where <em>Conversation<\/em> articles are republished is the key factor in determining their readership stats. Among many other sites to have picked up on Nick\u2019s article, <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/the-top-six-dinosaur-myths-and-how-we-busted-them-59031\">\u2018The top six dinosaur myths and how we busted them\u2019<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/plants-and-animals\/the-top-six-dinosaur-myths-and-how-we-busted-them\/\"><em>IFL Science<\/em><\/a> ran it which engaged a huge US audience. Over half its readership came from the US.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_184\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-184\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/research-marketing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2016\/07\/convostats-e1467799463824.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-184\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/research-marketing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2016\/07\/convostats-e1467799463824.jpg\" alt=\"June saw our highest readership and the most number of articles published on The Conversation. \" width=\"500\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">June saw our highest readership and the most number of articles published on The Conversation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Bend it like Bale\u00a0or\u00a0bail it like Boris<\/h2>\n<p>Dinosaurs aside, June also saw a new article from Dr Ken Bray (Senior Visiting Fellow, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/mech-eng\/\">Department of Mechanical Engineering<\/a>) on <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/football-aerodynamics-of-the-perfect-free-kick-61700\">the aerodynamics of the perfect free kick<\/a> \u2013 published to coincide with the knock-out stages in the Euros and the progress of the Welsh national squad. Ken\u2019s article has already been read by close to 20,000 and has been republished in India, Russia as well as closer to home for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-3666861\/The-science-perfect-free-kick-Researchers-reveal-physics-football-say-Gareth-Bale-perfect-technique.html\">MailOnline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/polis\/staff\/charles-lees\/\">Professor Charlie Lees<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/polis\">Department of Politics, Languages &amp; International Studies<\/a>) became one of our most prolific authors, providing quick turnaround responses to the EU referendum and its impact on the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/by-riding-the-tiger-of-populism-the-conservatives-may-have-destroyed-the-uk-61614\">Conservative <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/this-may-be-the-week-that-finally-breaks-the-labour-party-61693\">Labour <\/a>parties as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/boris-bails-or-are-we-falling-for-another-trick-by-magic-johnson-61878\">botched leadership bid from Boris Johnson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Charlie\u2019s three articles in June were read by a worldwide audience of nearly 30,000 and republished on prominent new websites, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.uk\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=3&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwituqi9v97NAhUMLMAKHfsWCIkQFggoMAI&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Feurope.newsweek.com%2Fbrexit-may-finally-break-labour-475339&amp;usg=AFQjCNFCIHbu9fK5fULfV9kW9KC7h6_54A&amp;sig2=-rBVo8FDdN_cg7WIKYM23g&amp;bvm=bv.126130881,d.ZGg\"><em>Newsweek<\/em><\/a>. His latest article<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/boris-bails-or-are-we-falling-for-another-trick-by-magic-johnson-61878\"> \u2018Boris bails \u2013 or are we falling for another trick from magic Johnson?\u2019<\/a> \u2013 was used in full in this <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/\">Saturday\u2019s i newspaper<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_185\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-185\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/research-marketing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2016\/07\/CharlieLees-Brexit-e1467799531521.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-185\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/research-marketing\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/86\/2016\/07\/CharlieLees-Brexit-e1467799531521.jpg\" alt=\"Charlie Lees' article on the decision of Boris Johnson not to stand for the leadership of the Conservative Party was republished by the i newspaper. \" width=\"500\" height=\"542\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charlie Lees' article on the decision of Boris Johnson not to stand for the leadership of the Conservative Party was republished by the i newspaper.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other popular <em>Conversation<\/em> articles concerning the referendum included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/management\/faculty\/richard_fairchild.html\">Dr Richard Fairchild\u2019s<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/management\/\">School of Management<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/game-theory-offers-a-better-way-forward-in-britains-eu-drama-61226\">\u2018Game theory offers a better way forward in Britain\u2019s EU drama\u2019<\/a> and comments from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/polis\/staff\/bill-durodie\/\">Professor Bill Durodie<\/a>\u00a0(POLIS)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/brexit-is-on-britain-votes-to-leave-the-eu-experts-respond-61576\">in response to the vote to leave<\/a> on the morning of Friday 24 June. Alison\u2019s article \u2013 timed to coincide with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/research\/news\/2016\/06\/13\/organic-electronics\/\">the announcement of new Horizon 2020 funding<\/a> - has seen wide coverage with 33,310 reads and also been republished on the influential <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2016\/06\/in-the-future-lighting-could-be-printed-straight-onto-your-wall\">World Economic Forum \u2013 Agenda<\/a><\/em>.
