{"id":262,"date":"2017-09-06T14:39:05","date_gmt":"2017-09-06T13:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/research-marketing\/?p=262"},"modified":"2017-11-01T13:52:20","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T13:52:20","slug":"research-excellence-framework-initial-decisions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/knowledge-exchange-and-research-impact\/2017\/09\/06\/research-excellence-framework-initial-decisions\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Excellence Framework - initial decisions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a long wait over the summer HEFCE have now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hefce.ac.uk\/rsrch\/ref2021\/\">published the initial decisions on the Research Excellence Framework 2021<\/a>.\u00a0 A summary of the main decisions can be found below.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also worth noting that they are now inviting applications for the sub-panel chairs; to apply see Annex B of the initial decisions on the REF document. <strong>The deadline for applications is 11 October 2017.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Main decisions<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">General:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The assessment outcomes will be the product of expert review, informed by indicators where appropriate.\u00a0 Profile weightings will be as follows;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Outputs 60%<\/li>\n<li>Impact 25%<\/li>\n<li>Environment 15%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Unit of Assessment Structure:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Several UoAs have been revised;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There will be a single UoA for engineering, with a formalised sub-group structure<\/li>\n<li>UoA 17 will be restructured as follows: UoA 14 Geography and Environmental studies and UoA 15 Archaeology<\/li>\n<li>Film and Screen studies will be located in UoA 33 (currently 35) Music, Drama, Dance, Performing Arts and Screen Studies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Institutional level assessment<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There will be no institutional level impact case studies though HEFCE will run a pilot which will affect future exercises.<\/li>\n<li>There will be no institutional level Environment statement.\u00a0 Institutional level information will be included in the UoA-level environment template.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Interdisciplinary research<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each sub-panel will have at least one member appointed to oversee the assessment of interdisciplinary research<\/li>\n<li>To enable better identification of interdisciplinary research an \u2018interdisciplinary identifier\u2019 for outputs will be included, with a clear definition and guidance for its use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Environment:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The environment template will be more structured and use more quantitative data.<\/li>\n<li>There will be a \u201cdiscrete\u201d section of the environment template devoted to interdisciplinary research.<\/li>\n<li>There will be no impact template but it will be an \u201cexplicit section in the environment element\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The revised template will include a section on \u2018open research\u2019, detailing the approach to open access and open data<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Impact<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There will be an alignment of the definitions for impact so that Research Council definitions of \u2018academic impact\u2019 and \u2018wider impact\u2019 align with the purposes of the REF.<\/li>\n<li>There will be additional guidance on the criteria of \u2018reach and significance\u2019 and impacts arising from public engagement.<\/li>\n<li>Impact on teaching will include teaching within the university as well as beyond; additional guidance to follow<\/li>\n<li>Impact will stay with the institution where the research was conducted<\/li>\n<li>Underpinning research will remain at 2*<\/li>\n<li>The period for underpinning research will be 1 January 2000- 31 December 2020<\/li>\n<li>Impact can occur from 1 August 2013 to 31 July 2020<\/li>\n<li>Case studies can be a continuation of a 2014 Case study but they will need to provide evidence of additional impact.<\/li>\n<li>A similar number of case studies to 2014 will be required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>There is also <a href=\"http:\/\/(http:\/\/www.hefce.ac.uk\/media\/HEFCE,2014\/Content\/Pubs\/2017\/CL,332017\/CL2017_33a.pdf)\">a consultation open requesting views<\/a>\u00a0(PDF) on questions on staff and output portability.\u00a0 The University will respond to this; if you have any views to inform this response please do <a href=\"mailto:K.E.McKen@bath.ac.uk\">contact Katy McKen<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a long wait over the summer HEFCE have now published the initial decisions on the Research Excellence Framework 2021.\u00a0 A summary of the main decisions can be found below.
