{"id":62,"date":"2026-05-05T09:00:04","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T08:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/lgbtqplus-inclusion\/?p=62"},"modified":"2026-04-27T08:28:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T07:28:38","slug":"visible-inclusion-ideas-and-activities-to-mark-lgbtq-commemorative-months-in-your-department","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/lgbtqplus-inclusion\/2026\/05\/05\/visible-inclusion-ideas-and-activities-to-mark-lgbtq-commemorative-months-in-your-department\/","title":{"rendered":"Visible inclusion: Ideas and activities to mark LGBTQ+ commemorative months in your department"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With Pride Month coming up in June I wanted to share a few ideas you can use to mark the month, and other ideas for ongoing activity to help make LGBTQ+ students and staff feel welcome and valued:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Hang some rainbow bunting in your reception or stairwell!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Use display boards in your department to highlight famous LGBTQ+ people in your specialism<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Facilitate a \u2018lunch and learn\u2019 session<\/strong><br \/>\nThere maybe someone you have in mind from your specialism, or you could contact me (Catherine Butler) to help identify a speaker. Topics might include: \u2018coming out\u2019, how to be a better ally, intersectionality and the nuances of identity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Coordinate a Pride Month book club<\/strong><br \/>\nSelect a book by an LGBTQ+ author, or one that features LGBTQ+ characters or topics. Invite your departmental community to come together for a discussion at the end of the month (maybe providing refreshments too!). Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldofbooks.com\/en-gb\/pages\/pride-month?gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=20307190729&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADZzAIBnGxx5FELJ2v8r-4cyaS4xR&amp;gclid=CjwKCAiAtLvMBhB_EiwA1u6_Pkeg0-IUsOVMUfQnaHy_hN_Bc-unIWxBoh_4i-POWXt20ZB6UgOBWRoCXTwQAvD_BwE\">book suggestions can be found here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Host a Pride Month film screening<\/strong><br \/>\nHave a look at some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/editorial.rottentomatoes.com\/guide\/best-lgbt-movies-of-all-time\/\">movie suggestions here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Departmental newsletter article<\/strong><br \/>\nInclude an article on an LGBTQ+ person or topic relevant to your area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organise for staff and\/or students to walk together in a Pride parade<\/strong><br \/>\nThere are marches in both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bathpride.org\/\">Bath<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bristolpride.co.uk\/\">Bristol.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Highlight the importance of language<\/strong><br \/>\nCirculate the University's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/guides\/pronouns-and-inclusivity-guidance\/\">inclusive language guidance<\/a> and let staff know how to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/pronouns-on-your-profile-in-microsoft-365-232c3bfb-a947-4310-86db-b22d63663d85\">add their pronouns in Teams<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make rainbow lanyards and pronoun badges easily available<\/strong><br \/>\nEmail <a href=\"mailto:diversity@bath.ac.uk\">diversity@bath.ac.uk<\/a> to order some for your reception area.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There are some important things to remember when planning events and and activities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>LGBTQ+ commemorative months can bring up complicated feelings for LGBTQ+ colleagues (e.g. it might remind people of times of rejection, discrimination or even violence).<\/li>\n<li>Not all LGBTQ+ colleagues want, need or value the same things \u2013 this community is as diverse as any other.<\/li>\n<li>Be open to feedback from LGBTQ+ staff and students.<\/li>\n<li>Keep things \u2018appropriate\u2019, i.e. not everyone is comfortable with being out (and people\u2019s personal and romantic lives are generally not up for public discussion usually anyway).<\/li>\n<li>Avoid \u2018rainbow-washing\u2019 and empty gestures.
