This begins a 40‑day scrutiny period, after which the Code may come into effect if neither House raises objections.

I know that announcements like this can prompt questions or worries, so I wanted to offer a bit of clarity from my own perspective as the University’s LGBTQ+ Lead. The Code provides guidance on interpreting the Equality Act, but it does not replace the Act or introduce new legal duties. The Equality Act remains the primary source of law, and its protections for gender‑diverse, nonbinary and Trans people remain unchanged. The University also continues to hold its responsibilities around equality, non‑discrimination, harassment prevention, safeguarding and inclusion under the Public Sector Equality Duty. None of that has shifted.

Key leaders across the University are now reviewing the updated Code carefully, and formal updates will be shared once that work is complete. I’m writing here to acknowledge this latest development and to make sure you know that people across the University are already working through the details and keeping pace with what’s happening.

If you witness or experience behaviour that challenges your identity or makes you feel unsafe, please do use the reporting routes available to you. The Never OK framework explains how to respond as a bystander, and Student Support, your EDI Lead and Support and Report are all available if you personally need support. Every report is handled sensitively and taken seriously.

I’ll share further information and reflections as things develop. In the meantime, please look after yourselves and one another.

Many of you may already have seen that yesterday, Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities, laid the updated Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) Code of Practice on the Equality Act before Parliament.
