{"id":1191,"date":"2023-08-07T16:10:44","date_gmt":"2023-08-07T16:10:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/on-parade\/?p=1191"},"modified":"2023-08-08T08:51:03","modified_gmt":"2023-08-08T08:51:03","slug":"olympic-hopefuls-which-university-of-bath-students-and-alumni-are-hoping-to-head-to-paris-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/on-parade\/2023\/08\/07\/olympic-hopefuls-which-university-of-bath-students-and-alumni-are-hoping-to-head-to-paris-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic hopefuls: which University of Bath students and alumni are hoping to head to Paris 2024?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After enjoying the most successful Olympic and Paralympic Games yet at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/sport\/olympic-paralympic\/tokyo-2020\/\">Tokyo 2020<\/a>, student and alumni athletes are working hard towards achieving their dreams at Paris 2024.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With less than a year to go until the games begin, we\u2019ve reviewed some of Team Bath\u2019s recent sporting victories to see which students and alumni are planning for podium places at Paris.<\/p>\n<h4>Swimming<\/h4>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The moment of becoming World Champions\ud83d\udc51\ud83c\udf0e<\/p>\n<p>What a final leg (and celebration\ud83e\udd29) from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomdean00?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@tomdean00<\/a> \ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25\ud83d\udd25<\/p>\n<p>(\ud83c\udfa5:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/23o82ZzWxE\">https:\/\/t.co\/23o82ZzWxE<\/a>) <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CRY8gXiyfL\">https:\/\/t.co\/CRY8gXiyfL<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Zd9HSIYdmg\">pic.twitter.com\/Zd9HSIYdmg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Aquatics GB (@Aquatics_GB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Aquatics_GB\/status\/1684913850636808192?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 28, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Members of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/sport\/swimming\/national-centre-swimming\/\">British Swimming Performance Centre Bath<\/a>, who train in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/facilities\/#swim\">London 2012 Legacy Pool<\/a>\u00a0at the University, have brought home 13 medals from the last three Olympic Games \u2013 including an astounding seven gold at Tokyo 2020.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two of them went to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/athlete-zone\/scholarships\/\">Bill Whiteley Sporting Scholar<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/departments\/department-of-mechanical-engineering\/\">mechanical engineering<\/a> student Tom Dean MBE, who recently added to his international medal collection with a gold, silver and bronze at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan in July.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tom secured the gold for Britain with a scorching last leg of 1:43.84 in the men\u2019s 4x200m freestyle relay to go alongside his individual 200m freestyle silver \u2013 finishing just two-hundredths of a second from gold \u2013 and 200m individual medley bronze.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tom told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/2023\/07\/26\/one-year-to-paris-2024-olympic-games\/\">Team Bath<\/a>: \u201cIt bodes well for the relay and really bodes well for the Paris Olympics next year. The podium placing was the first continental medal for 30 years by a British pairing in the Duet. Kate confirmed her hopes for a place in Paris 2024 to Team Bath: \u201cNext, we want that Olympic medal and we\u2019re going to fight for it and absolutely train our socks off to try and get there. We\u2019ve got a taste of it today and I can tell that we\u2019re both so motivated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Also making a Team GB appearance at the Fukuoka World Championships were recent graduate and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/athlete-zone\/scholarships\/\">Goldsmith scholar<\/a> Daniella Lloyd and current student Robyn Swatman. Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/athlete-zone\/scholarships\/santander-scholarship\/\">Santander scholar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate-2023\/sport-exercise-and-health\/fdsc-sport-sports-performance-with-option-to-progress-to-one-year-bsc\/\">sports performance<\/a>\u00a0alumna Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz won the first Grand Slam medal of her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/sport\/judo\/\">judo<\/a>\u00a0career by claiming a silver in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Tokyo Olympian, who represents Mexico, was in fantastic form in the -63kg weight division as she won her podium place by defeating her opponent in just over 90 seconds. Prisca said of her win in an Instagram post: \u201cThis has only made me hungry for more! The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/sport\/athletics\/\">University\u2019s high-performance athletics squad<\/a> member took the baton in the lead and finished with a flourish as GB claimed the continental title in a new Championship record of 43.04.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambath.com\/athlete-zone\/scholarships\/santander-scholarship\/\">King Sporting Scholar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/courses\/undergraduate-2021\/sport-exercise-and-health\/fdsc-sport-sports-performance\/\">sports performance<\/a>\u00a0alumnus Alastair Chalmers is also expected to try and secure a Paris 2024 place after making athletics history for Guernsey with a 400m hurdles bronze at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games \u2013 Guernsey\u2019s first-ever track and field medal at a Commonwealth Games. Alastair told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/guernsey\">BBC Guernsey<\/a>: \u201cI gritted so hard down the home straight; the crowd were absolutely amazing.
