Instead, she kept an open mind to what an Engineering degree could give her. <\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Years later \u2013 after enjoying nights out at Komedia and enduring all-nighters at the library \u2013 she's Team Leader at BMW in Munich, Germany.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why did you choose to study at Bath?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0BSc in Mechanical\u00a0Engineering\u00a0is\u00a0highly regarded\u00a0and would give me the flexibility to switch between different specialisms. I really\u00a0wasn\u2019t\u00a0sure what I wanted to specialise in, so this was a big plus!\u00a0The\u00a0department also had great links with industry and offered the\u00a0chance\u00a0to do a\u00a0placement\u00a0year. To top it off, Bath is a beautiful city!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Did you have a particular career in mind when you chose your course?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Absolutely not. Some people know from the age of ten what they want to do when\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0older, but I really had no idea.\u00a0I thought studying\u00a0Engineering might offer a lot of opportunities and it matched well with the subjects I enjoyed at school, but I really\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0know what\u00a0it\u00a0would even be like as a career or what it would entail. Looking back though,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0very pleased\u00a0with my choice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Can you tell us about your experience of studying here? Any favourite memories, or places to go on campus and in the city?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Studying at Bath was great. The course was tough at times, but I learned a lot, which has set me up well for my career.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Highlights include pulling all-nighters in the library\u00a0while\u00a0working on design projects\u00a0and watching the sunrise. Also, movie nights in my room with friends\u00a0\u2013\u00a0we watched everything using a projector I bought\u00a0for \u00a330. It was\u00a0the best purchase I ever made!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For\u00a0nights\u00a0out,\u00a0my favourite was\u00a0Cheesy Fridays at\u00a0Komedia.\u00a0Komedia\u00a0took over from Moles for a year or so as there was sadly a massive fire.\u00a0Komedia\u00a0was an epic venue though, and as a pop princess, I was in my element there.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Were you a part of any societies or sports clubs during your time at Bath? What did you enjoy most about them?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I was in the handball team\u00a0and\u00a0the yoga and\u00a0Mechanical\u00a0Engineering\u00a0societies. These were a fantastic way to meet new people. I was also heavily involved in\u00a0Team Bath Racing Electric (TBRe)\u00a0in my final year, which was a fantastic experience. Many hours were spent in those labs preparing for race day. What is a typical day like in your current role?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After graduating, I started at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars on their\u00a0graduate\u00a0scheme. The placements and year in industry I\u00a0did\u00a0definitely\u00a0helped\u00a0me to get the role. The\u00a0grad\u00a0scheme was great, as I got to learn about lots of different departments and was also able to do a placement abroad within BMW in Munich, which was\u00a0amazing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Following the\u00a0grad\u00a0scheme, I got a permanent role as a Supplier Quality Engineer for\u00a0the\u00a0bespoke\u00a0accessories and\u00a0one-offs\u00a0department, where I was responsible for the quality of\u00a0weird and wonderful\u00a0modifications\u00a0\u2013 think\u00a0crystal whisky decanters, bespoke luggage sets\u00a0and trim panels for the vehicle interior made out of feathers, satin or mother of pearl.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I then moved to the Resident\u00a0Engineering\u00a0Team to support the launch of the new Rolls-Royce Ghost, where I worked\u00a0with\u00a0colleagues\u00a0in the plant and the\u00a0engineering\u00a0teams\u00a0based in Germany. Following this, I was promoted to Team Lead.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">After two years in that role, it was time for a change, so I got a role as a Team Leader at BMW, where I\u2019m now working on the next generation of electric motors for the entire BMW battery electric vehicle portfolio. It also meant a move to Munich! When I started, I never imagined that I would end up in another country, working in another language and learning from so many amazing engineers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As Team Lead for a specific\u00a0component\u00a0group, I\u00a0am responsible for\u00a0delivering the engineering,\u00a0functionality\u00a0and quality of the components within the project budget and timelines. A typical day for me is usually full of meetings with different engineers,\u00a0specialists\u00a0and suppliers\u00a0\u2013\u00a0usually to discuss and plan the implementation of changes to improve the product for our customers, or to solve the latest technical problem that has arisen and urgently needs a solution.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How did you adapt to working abroad in a new language?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">One of the perks of the grad scheme I did was that you could get free German lessons. The sudden switch to everything being in another language was tough in the beginning, especially as I was also moving to a new subject area with a lot of technical terminology. Did I ever expect to end up where I am now? Absolutely not. But am I amazed by just how far\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0come? 100% yes! I also\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0wait to see where I am in another ten years. Right now, I\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0even guess.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How did your studies help to develop you?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The placement year is the absolute best thing you can do as part of your degree. It gives you a real insight into working life, and a first opportunity to begin to understand what you do and\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0like in a job, and therefore what to look for when you graduate.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Having a year of experience on your CV when applying for jobs after your degree is a massive help. I also think the\u00a0large number\u00a0of group projects that are part of the Mech Eng course at Bath\u00a0help to prepare you for real life. As much as they can be a pain, in the\u00a0real\u00a0world,\u00a0engineers\u00a0need to\u00a0work together to make big complex products and solve difficult problems, and\u00a0the exposure to team\u00a0working environments really gives Bath graduates the edge when starting their careers.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What advice would you give to prospective students thinking about studying your course at Bath?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is one of the best decisions I ever made.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0an excellent\u00a0course in a beautiful city, and on top of that, I met so many wonderful people who are still some of my best friends today.
