Between Saturday 19 October and Saturday 9 November, researchers from across the University of Bath are sharing their research as part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Festival of Social Science events programme.<\/p>\n

Celebrating social sciences<\/h1>\n

Over four weeks this autumn, we have a range of free events planned with colleagues from across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Management. We'll explore diverse topics, including women and girls in football, prison architecture, the impact of the tobacco industry in Africa, and much more.<\/p>\n

Images of Research - Wednesday 16 October to Wednesday 6 November (Bath Spa railway station)<\/strong><\/p>\n

People arriving at Bath Spa railway station will have the opportunity to experience the\u00a0Images of Research exhibition<\/a>\u00a0and discover, through imagery inspired by or directly from research, University research and its benefits to society.<\/p>\n

Festival of Football Girl Players Tournament<\/h2>\n

Monday 21 October, 12.30-4.30pm (University of Bath Sports Training Village, Bath)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Researchers from the Department for Health, teams at Sport@Bath, Bath and North East Somerset council and eight local schools present a celebration of girls football with a player-led tournament hosted at the University of Bath's Sports Training Village.<\/p>\n

I'm a Social Scientist - Ask Me Anything!<\/h2>\n

Friday 1 November, 2.30-3.30pm (reddit.com\/r\/IAmA<\/a>)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over on the social news website Reddit, researchers Bethany Simmonds and Chao Fang from the Centre for Death and Society invite people to ask them anything with this chat-based online conversation. These events are great opportunities for Reddit users to dig a little deeper into topics such as ageism, end-of-life care and digital exclusion based on age.<\/p>\n

Friday 8 November, 2.30-3.30pm (reddit.com\/r\/IAmA<\/a>)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Researchers Ed Keogh and Ian Taverner\u00a0 from the Consortium to Research into Individual, Interpersonal and Social influences in Pain (CRIISP) project are sharing their work on how people think and feel about pain over on Reddit.<\/p>\n

Film screenings and discussions<\/h2>\n

Tobacco Slave - Thursday 7 November, 7-8.30pm (Little Theatre Cinema, Bath)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tobacco Slave<\/em> is a first-of-its-kind film that exposes the plight of tobacco farmers in Malawi and lets them share, in their own words, what a life of growing tobacco is really like. University of Bath filmmakers Roy Maconachie (Social & Policy Sciences) and Simon Wharf and a panel of contributors from The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, the University of Bath and IES-Congo, a Congolese research institute, invite people to join them for a film screening and discussion.<\/p>\n

Should Prisons be Beautiful? - Tuesday 5 November, 5-8pm (Hamilton House, Bristol)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Inspired by Yvonne Jewkes' (Social & Policy Sciences) research on rehabilitative prison design and coinciding with the publication of her book\u00a0An Architecture of Hope<\/em>, she and collaborator Andy West invite<\/span> people to join them to creatively discuss, 'should prisons be beautiful?'.<\/p>\n

Change the Game - Preventing injuries in Community Sport - Wednesday 6 November, 6-9pm (Bath Cricket Club, Bath)<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Keith Stokes and Carly McKay (Health) and researchers from the Centre for Health, and Injury and Illness Prevention in Sport are hosting community and grass-roots sports clubs to discuss their experiences of improving safety for players in community sports.<\/p>\n

Remembering France: Gender and Football in the Red Wall of Wales - Wednesday 6 November, 6.45-8.30pm (Grange Pavillion, Cardiff) and Friday 8 November, 7-9pm (Ty Pawb, Wrexham)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Penny Miles (Politics, Languages & International Studies) presents a screening of her film about the experiences of female football fans who joined the Red Wall of Wales on the thrilling journey the Welsh men's national football team took to reach the semi-finals of the 2016 European Championship.<\/p>\n

Research Assembly<\/h2>\n

The Festival of Social Science\"\"<\/h1>\n

Since 2002, the\u00a0Festival of Social Science<\/a>\u00a0has been a UK-wide celebration of the social sciences supported by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). Across four weeks in the autumn (Saturday 19 October to Saturday 9 November 2024), social science researchers have the opportunity to deliver activities and events that engage audiences with their work and highlight the value that social science research brings to our everyday lives.<\/p>\n
