Why this matters<\/strong><\/h2>\nEvery year, the HE-BCI survey gathers information about how universities across the UK work with businesses, communities, and the public. The University of Bath\u2019s survey return helps inform the amount of Higher Education Innovation Funding (HEIF) we receive.<\/p>\n
Recording your public engagement activities helps us demonstrate the scale and range of your public engagement work and supports continued funding for activities like these.<\/p>\n

What counts as a public event?<\/strong><\/h2>\nYour event can be included if you organised, took part, or delivered it and University-generated knowledge was exchanged with people outside of academia \u2013 this can be any type of public or community group or audience.<\/p>\n
It must also fall under one of the following categories:<\/p>\n
\n- Public lectures<\/strong> and talk, either in-person or online.<\/li>\n
- Performance arts<\/strong> such as music, dance, or the dramatic arts, again either in-person or online.<\/li>\n
- Other<\/strong> public events that cannot be categorised and is open for interpretation. Examples include but are not limited to festival events, guided tours, education activities or exhibitions in non-University-owned museums and galleries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
The event must also have taken place between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2026.<\/p>\n
What events cannot be included?<\/strong><\/h2>\nThere are a number of event categories that cannot be included in the survey. These include:<\/p>\n
\n- Open days or student recruitment activities.<\/li>\n
- Student union activities that are student- or public-facing.<\/li>\n
- Widening participation activities organised as part of the University\u2019s Widening Participation commitments for the Access Plan accountable to the Office for Students.<\/li>\n
- Training programmes for learners that are for continuous professional development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
