The Public Engagement Unit is<\/span>\u00a0looking to fund<\/span>\u00a0up to<\/span>\u00a0three projects<\/span>, up to<\/span> \u00a35<\/span>,000<\/span>\u00a0each<\/span>, that explore how to\u00a0<\/span>engage public groups with research<\/span>\u00a0in a way that embraces both online and \u2018in-person\u2019 methods and activities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Innovate Fund: Resilience<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The aim of this new Engage Grants<\/a> fund is to advance engagement practice by\u00a0<\/span>funding creative projects that\u00a0<\/span>explor<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0and test a new<\/span>\u00a0way of engaging public groups\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>use both online and 'in-person' methods<\/span>\u00a0to engage them with research<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The call is\u00a0<\/span>open to\u00a0<\/span>researchers, experimental and technical\u00a0<\/span>staff<\/span>\u00a0and doctoral students at any level<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>across all<\/span>\u00a0discipline<\/span>s,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>whatever their level of public engagement expertise<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To facilitate the development of creative,\u00a0<\/span>collaborative<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>participatory<\/span>\u00a0projects we are\u00a0<\/span>bringing creative professionals and applicants together as part of a match-making<\/span>\u00a0workshop<\/span>\u00a0on\u00a0<\/span>Wednesday 2 June 2021, 1-5pm<\/span><\/b>. You\u2019ll have the opportunity to work together with the aim of\u00a0<\/span>co-creat<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0a selection of project ideas,<\/span>\u00a0three<\/span>\u00a0of which will\u00a0<\/span>receive up to \u00a35,000 each<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of the application process for the\u00a0<\/span>Innovate Fund: Resilience<\/span><\/i><\/a>\u00a0we\u00a0<\/span>anticipate<\/span>\u00a0all applicants to attend the match-making workshop and must complete an Expression of Interest form and return it to the Public Engagement Unit by\u00a0<\/span>Wednesday 19 May 2021, 5pm. Those successful will be notified by 5pm Thursday 20 May 2021. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Building resilient public engagement<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

During the\u00a0<\/span>COVID-19 emergency, public engagement with research practice was forced online. This move was driven by \u2018crisis-mode\u2019 responses of what is possible, rather than a carefully assessed understanding of public and researcher needs. This has created opportunities for more people to engage, but for many reasons has excluded others for many reasons. <\/span><\/p>\n

With the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>prospect of nearly all behavioural restrictions ending by June 2021, it has been assumed public engagement activities will return to a pre-pandemic \u2018norm\u2019<\/span>\u00a0of being in-person.\u00a0<\/span> However, whilst these activities create access and inclusion opportunities they also increase barriers for some.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With this one-off Engage Grants fund the Public Engagement Unit we would like t<\/span><\/span><\/span>o explore engagement activities that combine the best features of both online and in-person to ensure resilient and inclusive public engagement practice for all, regardless of the COVID-19 context and support researchers to develop their expertise in this practice. <\/span><\/p>\n

Engage Grant<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0for public engagement<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Running since 2013, the Engage Grants<\/a> aim to support researchers at the University of Bath to increase their skills and understanding of public engagement with research by funding activities where they have an opportunity to give public engagement a go for themselves.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the last eight years,\u00a0<\/span>we have<\/span>\u00a0invested over \u00a3105,000 in 74 diverse public engagement projects from the Faculties of Science, Design and Engineering and Humanities and Social Sciences and the School of Management.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
