{"id":977,"date":"2023-01-17T10:07:10","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T10:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/publicengagement\/?p=977"},"modified":"2023-01-19T15:07:43","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T15:07:43","slug":"six-projects-successful-in-the-latest-engage-grants-funding-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/publicengagement\/2023\/01\/17\/six-projects-successful-in-the-latest-engage-grants-funding-call\/","title":{"rendered":"Six projects successful in the latest Engage Grants funding call"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sharing the forgotten history of 'Swimming Suffragettes' and co-creating a public and patient group exploring people's lived experience of ovarian cancer, are just a couple of the projects that recently secured funding as part of the Public Engagement Unit's Engage Grants.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Back in September 2022, we opened the call for our annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/corporate-information\/engage-grants-for-public-engagement\/\">Engage Grants funding scheme<\/a>. The Engage Grants are made up of two different funds and are designed to support researchers, staff and doctoral students, whatever their level of experience, to develop and deliver activities that engage public groups with their research. The funded projects in 2022\/23 are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sandhya Moise and Hannah Leese (Department of Chemical Engineering)<\/strong> - working with patients and clinicians at the Royal United Hospital, Sandhya and Hannah will deliver a series of focus groups to co-create a public and patient group to shape the development of their research on cancer detection devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW135666920 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW135666920 BCX8\">Anita Sikora<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span class=\"EOP SCXW135666920 BCX8\" data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\"><strong> (Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies)<\/strong> - <span class=\"TextRun SCXW266421020 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266421020 BCX8\">Anita will create an immersive talk using opera to share the lost legacy of 18th Century pioneering opera singer Margherita <span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW266421020 BCX8\">Durastanti and <\/span><\/span><\/span>explore <span class=\"TextRun SCXW266421020 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266421020 BCX8\">representations of motherhood on stage.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Progression<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This fund is for projects up to \u00a33,500 that expand existing activities, develop leadership and facilitation skills in public engagement or test out innovative engagement activities. Through arts-based activities and celebration events, this work will guide and inform the development of an information hub to better support pupils' learning.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"TextRun SCXW66191726 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW66191726 BCX8\"><strong>Stephanie Merchant (Department for Health)<\/strong> - in collaboration with <span class=\"TextRun SCXW94100659 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW94100659 BCX8\">Cleveland Pools, the <\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u2018<em>Swimming Suffragettes\u2019 and \u2018Lido Ladies\u2019\u00a0<\/em>project will explore <span class=\"TextRun SCXW165215351 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW165215351 BCX8\">women\u2019s experiences of swimming at Cleveland Pools. Working with swimmers and volunteers, oral histories will be captured with <span class=\"TextRun SCXW144509993 BCX8\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW144509993 BCX8\">Bath residents looking at historic inequalities around swimming which will be used to <\/span><\/span>create an audio tour of the venue.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Katie O'Brien (Department of Life Sciences)<\/strong> - drawing on her fieldwork experience in Antarctica, Katie will create an interactive audio-visual exhibition sharing her life as a scientist that will travel to science festivals over 2023.<\/p>\n<h1>Engage Grants<\/h1>\n<p>Running since 2013, the Engage Grants aim to support researchers at the University of Bath to develop their skills and understanding of public engagement with research by funding activities where they have an opportunity to give public engagement a go for themselves.
