{"id":61,"date":"2024-11-18T08:56:35","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T08:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/pvc-education\/?p=61"},"modified":"2024-11-18T09:48:57","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T09:48:57","slug":"lets-talk-education-disability-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/pvc-education\/2024\/11\/18\/lets-talk-education-disability-history-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Let's Talk Education: Disability History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since taking on my role as PVC Education at Bath, one of the things that has brought me the most joy at work, is meeting and connecting with members of our community to talk about the key issues in education.<\/p>\n<p>'Let's Talk Education' is my approach to capturing and sharing those conversations with our community.<\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">UK Disability History Month runs from 14th November to 20th December. It's an annual event, creating a platform to focus on the history of the struggle of people with disabilities for equality and human rights, and to create space to celebrate those who champion and advocate for positive change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Let&#039;s Talk Education: Disability History Month\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1030002146?h=6cef22dcc5&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">I was therefore delighted to invite Isobel Shone, Chair of the Disability Action Group, and Steven Lawrence, Deputy Director for Student Access and Success to join me to discuss this important topic in the context of education at Bath. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">We, of course, were only able to scratch the surface in this short video, but covered some important areas, including our current governance work, our strategic focus on ensuring our education and student experience enable all students to thrive, and the importance of connecting with and supporting one another. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">I was particularly struck by Isobel's reflections on the impact of a lecturer acknowledging disabled students in the first session of the academic year, and the fact that a fear of getting things wrong can sometimes hold us back from having important conversations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">This is an area of continued learning for me, as I'm sure it is for many of you too, particularly in light of updated sector guidance, but I'm hugely encouraged by the examples of good practice already happening, and the passion and appetite from both our staff and students for continued enhancement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Staff received a communication from Cassie Wilson (Pro-Vice-Chancellor Student Experience) at the beginning of the semester with some useful links to current guidance, so we've included some of those again for ease below, and I'd encourage you to engage with our wider activities this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/disability-history-month-and-international-people-with-disabilities-awareness-day-idad-2024\/\">Disability History Month, which you can explore here, with huge thanks to all those involved.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Useful Links for Staff Supporting Disabled Students:<\/strong><u><\/u><\/p>\n<div>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>You can review guidance on supporting disabled students <u><a title=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/guides\/how-to-support-disabled-students\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/guides\/how-to-support-disabled-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\">here<\/a><\/u>, or contact the\u00a0<u><a title=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/professional-services\/disability-service\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/professional-services\/disability-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"5\">Disability Service<\/a><\/u> with any queries.<\/li>\n<li><u><a title=\"https:\/\/teachinghub.bath.ac.uk\/guide\/support-for-students-wtih-disabilities\/\" href=\"https:\/\/teachinghub.bath.ac.uk\/guide\/support-for-students-wtih-disabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">Advice on supporting students through teaching and learning <\/a><\/u>in addition to guidance to support wider resources available via the <u><a title=\"https:\/\/teachinghub.bath.ac.uk\/guide-category\/inclusive-learning-and-teaching\/\" href=\"https:\/\/teachinghub.bath.ac.uk\/guide-category\/inclusive-learning-and-teaching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\">Teaching Hub<\/a><\/u>.
