It\u2019s a term that covers a wide range of inter-connected elements of everything related to research. It\u2019s an area that the government and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/what-we-offer\/supporting-healthy-research-and-innovation-culture\/research-and-innovation-culture\/\">UKRI<\/a> have prioritised in recent strategy documents, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/RE-021221-EnhancingResearchCultureCircularLetter20212022.pdf\">funding<\/a> from Research England endorsing a strong commitment to the agenda.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m delighted to bring you a post from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/profiles\/faculty-of-humanities-social-sciences-associate-dean-research-julie-barnett\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"0\">Julie Barnett<\/a>, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), describing the exciting work that she and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/profiles\/head-of-research-policy-and-information-katy-mcken\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">Katy McKen<\/a>, Head of Research Policy in Research and Innovation Services are leading on. The programme of work they have developed, with involvement from colleagues across the University, is looking at what the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/enhancing-research-culture-at-the-university-of-bath\/\">research culture looks like at Bath<\/a>, how we can build on the good practice that is evident across the institution and what changes we can make to improve the experience for all our colleagues.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/inaugural-research-culture-week-taking-place-from-20-june\/\">Research culture week<\/a>, scheduled to take place from 20th to 24th June, is shaping up to be an interesting few days. It involves an intricate set of elements; both internal and external, visible and invisible. These include our collective norms, behaviours, values, expectations, and attitudes towards what is researched, how it is researched, by whom and how it is shared.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Why is Research Culture important?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">An ambitious vision was set out to make the UK a global science superpower in 2021. In acknowledging the work required to achieve this, the Government published its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/1004685\/r_d-people-culture-strategy.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">R&amp;D People and Culture Strategy<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in 2021. This sets out a vision for ensuring the research system is made up of talented and diverse people with the right skills, working in an environment that nurtures and gets the best out of everyone.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Royal Society have produced this video to help set out why research culture is so important<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What is Research culture?\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mZ3bdTmjPKg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">But work by a number of organisations, including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/royalsociety.org\/topics-policy\/projects\/research-culture\/changing-expectations\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Royal Society<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.org\/what-we-do\/our-work\/research-culture\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wellcome Trust<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> have identified\u00a0 that there can be a lot of work in order to achieve this vision.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What are we doing at Bath?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/teams\/research-and-knowledge-exchange-committee\/\">Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee<\/a> approved a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/enhancing-research-culture-at-the-university-of-bath\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">programme of work<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to look at improving research culture at Bath. Much of this work is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/councils\/research-england\/\">Research England<\/a> Enhancing Research Culture fund. The work is led by a Research Culture Working Group, which I am chairing in my role as Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research). The group has representatives at senior and ECR level from all Faculties and the School, technical staff and members from relevant professional services including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/professional-services\/research-innovation-services-ris\/\">Research and Innovation Services<\/a> (RIS),<a href=\"https:\/\/library.bath.ac.uk\/home\"> the Library<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/departments\/doctoral-college\/\">Doctoral College<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/professional-services\/human-resources\/\">HR.<\/a> Katy McKen, Head of Research Policy is leading this work from an operational point of view.<\/span><span created six pillars that we believe are central to a strong research culture and around which the work will be structured:<\/span><span data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"Times New Roman\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Collegiality: <\/span><\/b>Creating an environment in which colleagues support each other to succeed<\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\u2022\" data-font=\"Times New Roman\" data-listid=\"3\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Open Research: <\/span><\/b>Supporting transparency, rigour, and reproducibility of research and valuing different research output types<span data-aria-posinset=\"5\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Research Recognition: <\/span><\/b>Recognising and celebrating the widest range of inputs to our excellent
