Recently, I met with Isobel, a Mathematics student who chairs the SU\u2019s Diversity and Support Executive Committee and sits on the Disability Action Group. That spirit of partnership is something\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0embracing through the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/announcements\/inclusive-education-semester-1-actions-and-guidance-for-staff\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Inclusive Education Project<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, one of my strategic priorities this year. This work is driven by external requirements, such as the Equality Act and EHRC guidance, as well as internal feedback , including the Disability Service audit and the rise in IMC applications. The draft framework consists of three levels, starting with Level 1, which is based on the principles of <a href=\"https:\/\/udlguidelines.cast.org\/\">Universal Design for Learning<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This means\u00a0standard inclusive practices\u00a0will be\u00a0built into teaching, learning,\u00a0and assessment for all students\u00a0-\u00a0without requiring requests or evidence\u00a0-\u00a0reducing pressure on both students and staff.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If a student\u2019s needs go beyond\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0already built in,\u00a0Level 2\u00a0offers\u00a0individual adjustments that can be added\u00a0(e.g. extra time\u00a0or a scribe\u00a0in exams,\u00a0or\u00a0a\u00a0specialist mentor).\u00a0Level\u00a03 of\u00a0the framework\u00a0then\u00a0applies in rare situations which require bespoke solutions. These exceptional adjustments need specialist input and formal approval.\u00a0Each level will\u00a0be accompanied by\u00a0clear\u00a0procedures\u00a0and\u00a0recommended adjustments,\u00a0so colleagues feel confident in supporting disabled students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Isobel welcomed these\u00a0potential\u00a0changes and shared her experience as a Student Outreach Ambassador, where she helped design training to make events more inclusive\u00a0-\u00a0such as providing clear accessibility information\u00a0for events\u00a0and using alt text for images. These small steps make\u00a0a big difference, and the same applies in teaching and assessment.\u00a0Staff consultation on the proposed Framework is already\u00a0underway,\u00a0and we are starting student consultation activities\u00a0in partnership with the SU Voice team. Staff can find out more on the Project\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/computingservices.sharepoint.com\/:u:\/r\/sites\/InclusiveEducationProject\/SitePages\/TopicHome.aspx?csf=1&amp;web=1&amp;e=dqi5L4\">SharePoint site<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, while students can contact the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesubath.com\/voice\/have-your-say\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">SU Voice team<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We also reflected on last year\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/pvc-education\/2024\/11\/18\/lets-talk-education-disability-history-month\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Disability History Month video<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, where Isobel spoke about how reassuring it was when a lecturer openly invited students to discuss support needs. That simple gesture\u00a0-\u00a0acknowledging the topic and showing willingness to help\u00a0-\u00a0can\u00a0make\u00a0a huge impact. Isobel noted that staff are talking more about disability this year\u00a0in teaching sessions, and that matters.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0not about having all the answers;\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0about starting the conversation and working together.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Isobel gave another powerful example: before a recent interview, she received an email\u00a0checking in and\u00a0asking if any adjustments were needed. That proactive approach made her feel comfortable\u00a0disclosing\u00a0her disability and performing at her best. Flexibility and communication are key.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We also touched on the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesubath.com\/campaigns\/topten\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">SU\u2019s Top Ten priorities<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for 2025-26, two of which link directly to\u00a0our\u00a0Inclusive Education\u00a0work. Isobel highlighted the stress students face around exams and coursework deadlines\u00a0and how this could be\u00a0exacerbated\u00a0for some disabled students,\u00a0especially when there is\u00a0uncertainty\u00a0around<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0IMC\u00a0applications\u00a0and\u00a0outcomes. Clearer processes and ongoing contact can help students make informed decisions and feel more confident about the support mechanisms\u00a0available<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0She also suggested\u00a0the university\u00a0celebrate\u00a0and promote\u00a0positive changes\u00a0to students,\u00a0however small, and\u00a0emphasised\u00a0the importance of\u00a0embedding continuous\u00a0dialogue with disabled students as things evolve.\u00a0I agree!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Disability History Month is a time to reflect - but also to act.
