As part of Race Equality Week, we spoke to Jenny about her move into higher education, her experiences so far, and why she\u2019s passionate about creating inclusive spaces for ethnically diverse staff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Career Pivot with Purpose<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before joining the University of Bath, Jenny had been working in legal and compliance related roles at Lloyds Banking Group for over 15 years. But last year, Jenny decided it was time for a change and was interested in roles in the higher education sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 45, I\u2019ve still got another 15 years of working. If I was going to pivot, now was the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her motivation to make the change came from conversations with recent graduates and apprentices, during her time at Lloyds. Many described the steep learning curve when transitioning from university to employment\u2014 in particular the differences around communication in a corporate world and managing workplace dynamics. Jenny noticed this was particularly mentioned by ethnically diverse colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt there was a gap in support for students making that transition. While my current role isn\u2019t directly focused on that, I wanted to get experience in higher education and hopefully eventually move into a role where I can help bridge that gap.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joining the University of Bath<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jenny joined the Student Money Advice team seven weeks ago and has found the environment welcoming and supportive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been really enjoyable. Everyone\u2019s been helpful, and there\u2019s no sense of being rushed or pressured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She highlights the induction process as a positive experience, especially the emphasis on accessibility and inclusion where:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Managers encouraged open conversations about individual needs.<\/li>\n<li>Resources like the Access to Work scheme were signposted early on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jenny highlighted that there is a real sense of belonging and camaraderie, both in her team and across the university.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joining the Mosaic Staff Network<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jenny has joined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/guides\/staff-networks-and-groups\/\">Mosaic<\/a>, the staff network for ethnically diverse staff at the University, as a way of connecting with other ethnically diverse staff and to see what work was going on to support staff behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Lloyds, I was involved in similar groups, and I\u2019d love to help bring some of that energy here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jenny is hoping to put her experience and connections to good use to provide interesting and supportive events for ethnically diverse students and staff, both through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/guides\/staff-networks-and-groups\/\">Mosaic<\/a> but also other groups such as the Black Students Network.<\/p>\n<p>The Mosaic staff network is a space where all ethnically diverse staff within the University come together to socialise and advocate for racial equality within the University. It meets monthly and has a diverse agenda from guest speakers to discussion sessions with Socials and learning and Development sessions planned for next year.<\/p>\n<p>The networks supports its members:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>in building connections between staff and enabling members to share their experience<\/li>\n<li>by providing a safe space for ethnically diverse staff to discuss topics of interest<\/li>\n<li>in raising awareness of the issues facing ethnically diverse staff<\/li>\n<li>by advocating for racial equality within the University, including through supporting of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/topics\/race-equality-charter\/\">Race Equality Charter<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Looking Ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jenny\u2019s story is a reminder of the value of diverse experiences and the importance of creating spaces for dialogue and support.
