Cleo Lake and Teslim Bukoye<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Thank you to everyone who has attended one of our events or read any of our Black History Month<\/a> content produced for 2025.<\/p>\n

We opened the month with a blog<\/a> on this year\u2019s theme \u201cStanding Firm in Power and Pride\u201d, by the University\u2019s Race Equality Charter (REC) Lead.<\/p>\n

At the Vice-Chancellor\u2019s invitation, award-winning researcher Malik Al Nasir, DLitt (h.c.), delivered talks to staff, students, and the local community. His powerful story, told with honesty and courage, left a lasting impression. Find out more about Malik and follow his work here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

We welcomed Cleo Lake to campus on 22 October, who spoke about her story as a Black woman growing up in Bristol, and journey into activism. Follow Cleo\u2019s work on the Decolonising Memory project via Instagram<\/a>.\u00a0Photo album \u2013 Cleo Lake talk.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

We would like to say a massive thank you to our students Jamaine<\/a> (undergraduate) and George<\/a> (postgraduate research) who shared their stories with us this month.<\/p>\n

The \u2018No Plates Like Home\u2019 initiative<\/a> was launched at lime tree with the SU\u2019s African and Caribbean Society taking over a food counter with a pop-up serving delicious food from family recipes.<\/p>\n

Dr Teslim Bukoye, Race Equality Charter Lead, reflects:<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom powerful stories to bold ideas, this month has strengthened our commitment to racial equity. I am proud of what we have achieved together and excited for what comes next. We will sustain this momentum, standing firm in power and pride every day. Thank you to our speakers, students, staff, and partners for a remarkable Black History Month. Our next steps align with our REC Bronze Award action plan and the University\u2019s mandate for global excellence with impact.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
