{"id":48,"date":"2017-01-10T12:09:15","date_gmt":"2017-01-10T12:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/researchdata\/?p=48"},"modified":"2017-01-11T09:06:17","modified_gmt":"2017-01-11T09:06:17","slug":"are-your-research-data-fair-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/researchdata\/2017\/01\/10\/are-your-research-data-fair-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"Are your research data FAIR enough?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.force11.org\/group\/fairgroup\/fairprinciples\">FAIR data principles<\/a> aim to make research data <strong>F<\/strong>indable, <strong>A<\/strong>ccessible, <strong>I<\/strong>nteroperable and <strong>R<\/strong>eusable.\u00a0You can read more about the FAIR principles in this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/sdata201618\">Scientific Data<\/a>\u00a0article.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h1>General principles, and already being adopted by the community<\/h1>\n<p>The principles have been developed, as a general guide to the \"FAIRness of data\" rather than as a specification through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.force11.org\/group\/fairgroup\/fairprinciples\">FORCE11<\/a> (the Future Of Research Communication and E-scholarship) FAIR Data Publishing Group. As a sign of their adoption by the community, the principles were\u00a0included in the July 2016 update of H2020 advice in their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/research\/participants\/data\/ref\/h2020\/grants_manual\/hi\/oa_pilot\/h2020-hi-oa-data-mgt_en.pdf\">Guidelines on FAIR Data Management in Horizon 2020<\/a>, The H2020 Guidelines also include a Data Management Plan (DMP) template that is compatible with the Principles.<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1>The principles, in detail<\/h1>\n<p>The Principles are reproduced here, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.force11.org\/group\/fairgroup\/fairprinciples\">from this page<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>To be <strong>Findable:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>F1. (meta)data are assigned\u00a0a globally unique and eternally persistent identifier.<br \/>\nF2. data are described with rich\u00a0metadata.<br \/>\nF3. (meta)data are\u00a0registered\u00a0or\u00a0indexed\u00a0in a searchable resource.<br \/>\nF4. metadata\u00a0specify\u00a0the data identifier.<\/p>\n<p>To be <strong>Accessible:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A1 \u00a0(meta)data are retrievable by their identifier using\u00a0a standardized communications protocol.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">A1.1 the protocol is\u00a0open, free, and universally implementable.<br \/>\nA1.2 the protocol allows for an\u00a0authentication and authorization procedure, where necessary.<\/p>\n<p>A2 metadata are accessible, even when the data are no longer available.<\/p>\n<p>To be <strong>Interoperable:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I1. (meta)data use a formal, accessible, shared, and broadly applicable language for knowledge representation.<br \/>\nI2. (meta)data use\u00a0vocabularies\u00a0that follow FAIR principles.<br \/>\nI3. (meta)data include\u00a0qualified references\u00a0to other (meta)data.<\/p>\n<p>To be <strong>Re-usable<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>R1. meta(data) have a plurality of accurate and relevant attributes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\">R1.1. (meta)data are released with a clear and accessible\u00a0data usage license.<br \/>\nR1.2. (meta)data are associated with their\u00a0provenance.<br \/>\nR1.3.
