Understanding the causes of deterioration is just \u00a0as \u00a0important as \u00a0resolving \u00a0vectors.<\/p>\n<p>The rail bridge over <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps\/ms?ie=UTF&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=202535012262556594667.0004db18a713cb0ed3a35\" target=\"_blank\">Westmoreland Road, (on the route of the U18 bus leaving \u00a0Oldfield\u00a0Park \u00a0on the way to uni) <\/a> Bath, England,\u00a0is \u00a0showing \u00a0some signs of \u00a0distress. Ignoring the small \u00a0amount of\u00a0vehicle damage to the beams there are 2 separate worrying \u00a0signs of \u00a0deterioration.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\">As\u00a0knowledgeable \u00a0engineers you \u00a0should be able to identify\u00a0both signs of \u00a0deterioration (in the beams only) and suggest \u00a0what \u00a0may have caused these. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\">You can just about make out both from Google street view but its much \u00a0easier to spot if you actually see the bridge<\/span><span style=\"font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"line-height: 19px\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/bathblogs.wpengine.com\/structures\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2013\/04\/bridge-westmoreland-road.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/bathblogs.wpengine.com\/structures\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/51\/2013\/04\/bridge-westmoreland-road.jpg\" alt=\"bridge-westmoreland road\" width=\"537\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The signs of deterioration could be: shear cracks,  flexural cracks, longitudinal cracks, spalling or random surface cracking.<\/p>\n<p>The causes  maybe anything  from blocked  expansion joints,  to overloading, Alkali-silica reaction, carbonation, or poor concrete cover.<\/p>\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\">\n<p style=\"line-height: 14.25pt\"><span style=\"font-size: 9.5pt;font-family: Georgia, serif\"> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week its something \u00a0a bit different!
