How To Stay Productive During Lockdown

Trying to cope with the outbreak of Coronavirus has had huge impacts on all groups of people worldwide. For students, it is a tricky time to readjust to completing university work from home, watching lectures online, being uncertain about exams, and of course, being limited to the houses we are residing in!

It’s easy to fall into a rut of unproductivity amidst this uncertainty- which is completely expected and justified- but hopefully, these tips will help to start integrating some productivity back into our lives, even during lockdown.

  1. Make sure you still get up and dressed, even though you aren’t going anywhere!

Knowing that you have nowhere to go and no one to see can be a very tempting offer to stay in your pyjamas all day, warm in bed, with the TV on… right? Wrong!

By getting dressed each day (despite not going anywhere), it puts you in the motion of getting things done and gives a sense of purpose.

If you’re wearing your loungewear, you’ll be in the mindset of lounging. If you wear your work wear (or a step down from that, just your normal clothes), you’ll be in the mindset of getting things done!


  1. Make daily task lists

This is my TOP tip for staying productive, and without doing this I’m certain I would have got no work done since lockdown began!

Each evening, I make a list of things I want to get done during the following day. This means that as soon as I wake up, I already have a direction of what I need to get done before I can relax and have downtime. I find that if you have loads to do but don’t know where to start, it’s far easier to give in to doing no work at all. Whereas, if you have set of written down goals for the day, you’re far more likely to achieve them.


  1. Make sure you still escape the house for a (socially distant) walk each day

Despite being in lockdown, we are able to leave the house once a day for some form of exercise. For me, this tends to be a jog or just a dog walk, and it has helped me immensely in staying sane during this time! It also mentally refreshes you during a work break, so you can come back and get right onto completing that daily task list!

[But remember, stay at least 2m apart from anyone you see on these walks/runs].


  1. Make your work environment optimal for focus

When I first came home from university due to the Coronavirus pandemic, I knew I wouldn’t be able to get anything done effectively unless I made some changes. I devoted a day to unpacking all my university things and re-organising it in the new environment so I would be able to find things when I needed them. I also moved a desk from downstairs in my house to my bedroom to create a better working environment. I think making a conscious effort to keep my room clean, the window open, and to make my bed each day is key so that it remains a productive environment.


  1. Make use of the online tools available to you

Being in lockdown has had big implications with regards to our degrees, with the exam formats currently unknown and being unable to connect as easily with group members for coursework. However, several tools are available to make this slightly easier for you.

Skype, Zoom and Microsoft Teams are all great tools for group calling to collaborate on work and have meetings regularly. And academia aside, a lot of companies have unlocked their resources to make them more accessible during lockdown, for example, meditation through Headspace. It’s really worth having a look into what’s available to you whilst trying to remain productive and sane at home!

I’ve found that implementing these changes into my home life has really helped me to try and keep on top of my university work as much as possible, despite the difficult circumstances we currently face. I think the key thing is to establish some kind of routine and structure within each day by having clear timeslots for working and relaxing, so we can try to enforce some structure (into a life otherwise completely lacking structure at present!).

  • I think that, during the lockdown, it's more important than ever to take care of yourself. Eat healthy stuff, exercise. And use tools that might help you. For example, thanks to task management tools, you will not have to remember about the stuff you have to do. All you will need to do is taking a look at the board and see what is there to be done. I use for that purpose, it works great.
