This one-year, full-time programme combines consumer behaviour, branding, digital marketing, market research and strategy with practical projects, real business challenges and career development. It is suitable for students from a wide range of academic backgrounds and prepares graduates for diverse marketing careers.

By Gabriela Chatwin, MSc Marketing student

If you are reading this, you are likely in a similar position to the one I was in a year ago: researching course options and trying to determine whether this degree is worthwhile, and whether this is the program for you. I wanted to share my experience and answer a few commonly asked questions to hopefully help you as you make this decision.

What is MSc Marketing?

The MSc Marketing at the University of Bath School of Management is a one-year, full-time programme designed to provide both the theoretical foundation and the practical skills required for a career in marketing. The course covers consumer behaviour, market research, branding, digital marketing and strategy. What I valued most was not just the content, but the way it was delivered. Case studies, group projects and presentations meant that the material was consistently applied rather than only studied for assessment purposes, and in fun and innovative ways through movie clips or modern references, all which made it considerably easier to retain and understand.

Do you need a marketing background?

The University indicates that applicants from related disciplines, such as psychology, business or management, tend to adapt to the course quickly, and I can confirm this from my own experience, having completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology rather than marketing. This background proved genuinely useful, since much of marketing relates to understanding decision-making and human behaviour. That said, I observed students from a wide range of academic backgrounds perform well on the course, including several without any prior business education. What appears to matter most is a willingness to engage consistently with the material rather than any specific prior qualification.

MSc Marketing vs MSc Management

In my view, MSc Marketing is ideal if you're interested in understanding consumers, building brands, creating marketing strategies and developing campaigns. The course explores topics such as consumer behaviour, digital marketing, branding and market research in much greater depth. Although both degrees develop valuable business skills, they have different areas of focus. In contrast, MSc Management provides a broader overview of business, covering areas such as finance, operations, organisational behaviour, leadership and strategy. It's a great option if you're looking for a general management qualification or are still exploring which area of business you'd like to specialise in. If you already know that marketing is the field you want to build your career in, MSc Marketing offers more specialised knowledge and practical experience that will prepare you for marketing-focused roles.

One of the biggest advantages of studying marketing is the variety of career paths available after graduation. An MSc Marketing can lead to roles in areas such as:

Social media marketing

Brand management and brand strategy

Public relations (PR)

Digital marketing

Market research and consumer insights

Sales and business development

Marketing consultancy

The broad range of skills you develop throughout the course means you are well prepared for opportunities across many different industries.

We explored case studies,
group projects and presentations in fun and innovative ways through movie clips or modern references.

Is MSc Marketing worth it?

Taking all of this into account, I would say the course has been absolutely worthwhile. This is not only academically, but also to the overall growth that took place over the year. I became noticeably more confident in analysing business problems, presenting to an audience, and contributing effectively within group settings. I feel better prepared to re-enter professional work than I did at the start of the programme. Two experiences stand out in particular. The first is the Future Business Challenge, which involves visiting with real companies to understand relevant business problems. This provided a more meaningful form of practical experience than classroom-based case studies alone. The second is the community built throughout the course. With semesterly course socials, along with receptions held in historical locations such as the Roman Baths, have all provided opportunities to build long lasting relationships and enjoy Bath socially as well. This contributed to a strong sense of community that added priceless value to the overall experience.

For anyone still deciding whether to apply, my view is that the combination of academically challenging courses, practical career development and a genuinely supportive social environment is what makes this course worthwhile. Not to mention Bath's Georgian architecture views were not a bad addition to daily life during the course 🙂

MSc students reception at the Roman Baths

MSc students Welcome Week networking event

[459,948,4,455,946,945,944,947,122,5,1,457
952,913,953,951,950,949
post-9761","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-choosing-a-course","category-future-business-challenge","category-international-students","category-learning-teaching-at-bath","category-msc-career-paths","category-msc-management","category-msc-marketing","category-msc-social-life","category-postgraduate","category-school-of-management","category-uncategorized","category-why-bath","tag-business-and-management","tag-choosing-bath","tag-msc-career-paths","tag-msc-in-management","tag-msc-in-marketing","tag-postgraduate-studies
["GET
