Plans for the 2020/21 academic year

Some of the detailed work taking place is now coming to fruition:

  • Following the very substantial redesign of course delivery across the University, the communication of material changes to offer holders and continuing students is now well underway. Our undergraduate offer holders have now been informed of the key changes to their courses, with postgraduate offer holders and continuing students being contacted next week. I appreciate this has been a significant endeavour with a huge amount of work at Faculty and departmental level and for Academic Registry, marketing and communications colleagues and many others. My sincere thanks to all those involved in helping us reach this significant milestone.
  • Work mapping all the GTA space to accommodate 2 metres of social distancing is now complete. This work will ensure safer teaching spaces and build some resilience into our plans over the months to come.
  • We have carefully considered requests for investment given the financial constraints we remain under. Due to the priority we are placing on safety, we have agreed to invest in the purchase of reusable face coverings and will be making them available to staff and students who need them. We are also investing in other safety measures, for example increasing the number of hand basins in student accommodation so that each student will have access to an individual sink. Additionally, we are installing hand sanitiser dispensers at building entrances and exits for staff, students and visitors.
  • You should by now have received an invitation to our next virtual Town Hall on Thursday 20 August and I do hope many of you can join if you are working on that date.
  • More details of our plans will be shared over the next few weeks.

Thank you for celebrating the ‘Class of 2020’

My thanks to all those who joined us to celebrate with our graduating students. We had a wonderful response with hundreds of students and staff engaging with our website, videos and through social media. We look forward to seeing these students at a future award ceremony in person.

Team Bath Racing success

Congratulations to our Team Bath Racing students for winning Formula Student UK this year. The team of 24 of our engineering students won the prestigious award despite stiff competition from 80 other teams worldwide, a superb achievement.

“University of the Year” award from the LTA

As some of you might be aware, we received some wonderful news last week from the LTA, the national governing body for tennis in Britain. At the LTA Tennis Awards, the University of Bath was named ‘University of the Year’.

This is a huge tribute to everyone involved with tennis at our University, not least as the nominations are drawn from tens of thousands of volunteers, coaches, officials, schools and clubs. My sincere congratulations to all those involved in tennis in particular, and in sports at Bath more widely, whose achievements continue to be such a source of pride for our community.

With warm good wishes,

Professor Ian White
Vice-Chancellor and President
