{"id":221,"date":"2017-05-11T09:00:14","date_gmt":"2017-05-11T08:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/?p=221"},"modified":"2017-09-14T09:41:38","modified_gmt":"2017-09-14T08:41:38","slug":"future-of-uk-coastal-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/2017\/05\/11\/future-of-uk-coastal-research\/","title":{"rendered":"The Future of UK Coastal Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The following blog post was contributed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/ace\/people\/blenkinsopp\/\">Chris Blenkinsopp<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/ace\/\">Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/research\/centres\/wirc\/events\/ycsec2017.html\">13th UK Young Coastal Scientists and Engineers Conference (YCSEC) <\/a>was held at Bath on 11-12th April as part of the University\u2019s 50th Anniversary celebrations organised by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/ace\/research\/weir\/index.html\">Water, Environment and Infrastructure Resilience (WEIR) research group<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/research\/centres\/wirc\/\">WIRC @ Bath<\/a>.\u00a0 The goal of the conference is to provide a unique opportunity for leading young coastal scientists and engineers working in academia and industry throughout the UK to present their work and network with their peers.\u00a0 Building on the success of previous conferences, the 13th YCSEC brought over 60 early career researchers and practitioners from more than 30 UK and overseas universities, research institutes and companies together for two days of fascinating presentations and exciting discussions.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-222\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-1.jpg\" alt=\"YCSEC 1\" width=\"1377\" height=\"916\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-1.jpg 1377w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-1-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1377px) 100vw, 1377px\" \/><\/a>To open the conference, Professor Ad Reniers from Delft University, an internationally renowned coastal modeller, gave a highly thought-provoking keynote presentation on \u201cRecent advances in modelling of wave impacts on complex coasts\u201d.\u00a0 This was followed over the two days with 27 outstanding presentations on topics including coastal tourism, beach morphology, wave processes, ocean engineering and port operations.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the talks, 17 posters were displayed in the refreshment area for discussion during networking sessions.\u00a0 As in previous years, bringing together research students and early post docs from all over the UK generated a friendly and collaborative environment, and this was evident during a very lively conference dinner at the Tramshed in Bath on the night of April 11th.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-223\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-2.jpg\" alt=\"YCSEC 2\" width=\"1278\" height=\"851\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-2.jpg 1278w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-2-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2017\/05\/YCSEC-2-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1278px) 100vw, 1278px\" \/><\/a>First and second place prizes were awarded for both posters and presentations, and the winners were:<\/p>\n<p>Presentations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1st Prize -\u00a0 Sonja Eichentopf, Imperial College<\/li>\n<li>2nd Prize -
