Two of our <\/span>WISE CDT<\/span><\/a> PhD students, Ioannis Markidis and Mariano Marinari, <\/span>attended the <\/span>26<\/span>th<\/span> European Biomass Conference and Exhibition<\/span><\/a> (EUBCE)<\/span> in <\/span>Copenhagen<\/span>, <\/span>Denmark <\/span>from <\/span>14<\/span>th<\/span> <\/span>to <\/span>17<\/span>th<\/span> <\/span>May<\/span> 2018<\/span>. <\/span>The Conference brought together <\/span>researchers, engineers, technologists, organisations, policy and decision makers and financing <\/span>institutions<\/span>. <\/span>EUBCE combines one of the largest biomass science and technology conferences with a <\/span>high-quality<\/span> industry exhibition, attracting biomass professionals from around the globe<\/span>. <\/span>There were about 1,400 participants from 65 countries around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Technical sessions were organised in parallel over the <\/span>four day<\/span> conference. <\/span>The main conference topics included b<\/span>iomass management and potential, feedstock<\/span> availability and variety<\/span>, energy crops, <\/span>the role of <\/span>algae, biofuels, anaerobic digestion and biogas, <\/span>and <\/span>conversion technologies for fuels, chemicals and materials<\/span>.<\/span> Emphasis was also <\/span>placed on <\/span>bio-refineries, the <\/span>climate impacts of bioenergy, integrated biomass production, policies<\/span>, <\/span>regulations and socio-economic aspects.<\/span> <\/span>Overall<\/span>,<\/span> t<\/span>here were <\/span>about 8<\/span>00 <\/span>oral <\/span>presentations, <\/span>a large number of <\/span>p<\/span>osters were<\/span> <\/span>displayed in <\/span>the main reception room<\/span>,<\/span> and several workshops were <\/span>conducted<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ioannis gave an oral presentation entitle<\/span>d<\/span> \u201cAnaerobic Digestion \u2013 How small can it be<\/span>?<\/span>\u201d and Mariano shared his poster \u201c<\/span>Exploring the viability of anaerobic digestion of livestock <\/span>and <\/span>agri<\/span>-<\/span>waste<\/span>s<\/span> in the UK<\/span>\u201d. <\/span>Besides the talks the conference provided many social events<\/span>, a<\/span> visit<\/span> to <\/span>the <\/span>C<\/span>ity <\/span>H<\/span>all<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>and a technical tour at the NGF <\/span>Holsted<\/span> Biogas Plant<\/span>. <\/span>Overall, i<\/span>t was a great experience for <\/span>them, which <\/span>helped make <\/span>new <\/span>connections<\/span>, provided feedback on their research,<\/span> <\/span>and improve<\/span>d<\/span> <\/span>their <\/span>presentation skills.<\/span><\/p>\n
