{"id":47,"date":"2015-03-19T12:10:46","date_gmt":"2015-03-19T12:10:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/?p=47"},"modified":"2015-05-21T14:50:46","modified_gmt":"2015-05-21T13:50:46","slug":"next-generation-membranes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/2015\/03\/19\/next-generation-membranes\/","title":{"rendered":"Funding secured to develop next generation membranes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers from our University have been awarded a \u00a31m Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) grant to research and develop the next generation of long lasting \u2018immortal membranes\u2019 that will be able to separate water from problematic particles such as pharmaceuticals or pollutants.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2015\/03\/Darrell-Patterson-Davide-Mattia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-48 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2015\/03\/Darrell-Patterson-Davide-Mattia.jpg\" alt=\"Darrell-Patterson-Davide-Mattia\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2015\/03\/Darrell-Patterson-Davide-Mattia.jpg 400w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2015\/03\/Darrell-Patterson-Davide-Mattia-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/chem-eng\/people\/patterson\">Dr Darrell Patterson<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/chem-eng\/people\/mattia\">Dr Davide Mattia<\/a>, in our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\/chem-eng\/\">Department of Chemical Engineering<\/a>, are part of a collaboration between six UK universities that has been awarded a \u00a36m EPSRC grant over five years.<\/p>\n<p>This funding will enable a collaborative project entitled \u2018From membrane material synthesis to fabrication and function\u2019 (SynFabFun), led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Newcastle University<\/a>, to establish a UK virtual membrane centre that will act to unite the UK membrane research community.<\/p>\n<p>The programme will look at improving membrane performance in four main industry sectors important to the UK and worldwide: Energy, Manufacturing, Pharma and Water. In all these industries, membranes have the potential to, and in some cases already do, provide a lower energy alternative to existing separation technology, requiring significantly smaller capital costs.<\/p>\n<p>Membranes are not yet widely used for some applications due to their operating costs, requiring periodic cleaning and, eventually, replacement.
