{"id":7,"date":"2014-12-05T09:57:55","date_gmt":"2014-12-05T09:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/?p=7"},"modified":"2015-05-21T14:45:31","modified_gmt":"2015-05-21T13:45:31","slug":"algae-mine-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/2014\/12\/05\/algae-mine-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers to use algae to clean up mine water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We can announce today that our researchers are part of a ground breaking <a href=\"http:\/\/avarice.org.uk\/main.html\" target=\"_blank\">GW4 research project <\/a>that aims to clean up water from a Cornish tin mine, using algae to harvest the precious heavy metals and produce biofuel at the same time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2014\/12\/mine-water.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-42\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2014\/12\/mine-water.jpg\" alt=\"mine-water\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2014\/12\/mine-water.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2014\/12\/mine-water-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.bath.ac.uk\/water\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/85\/2014\/12\/mine-water-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/gw4.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">GW4<\/a> is the South West Research Alliance that brings together the South West and Wales\u2019 four leading, research-intensive universities: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bath.ac.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Bath<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bris.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bristol<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cardiff.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cardiff<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exeter.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Exeter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from all four universities, in collaboration with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pml.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Plymouth Marine Laboratory <\/a>(PML) are now working with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.uk\/coalauthority\" target=\"_blank\">Coal Authority<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.veolia.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Veolia<\/a> to take untreated mine water samples from Wheal Jane tin mine in Cornwall into the laboratory and grow algae in them. The research will explore whether algae is effective in removing materials such as arsenic and cadmium from the mine water.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers will then look to convert the algae into a solid from which it\u2019s expected that precious heavy metals can be extracted and recycled for use in the electronics industry.
