Please show the love – but don't forget the money

WWF-UK sent an email to its supporters last week saying,

" ... building on the success of our film last Valentine’s day, please watch the following poignant short (5 minutes) film with Jeremy Irons and Maxine Peake.  It is based on a letter from a grandfather to his granddaughter about the world he cherishes and wishes for her to grow up in – a world threatened by our changing climate.  It was written especially for the campaign, by award-winning author Michael Morpurgo.  When it went live at midnight on February 3rd we had already achieved over half a million views by 8.30 am!"

WWF even suggested some tweets for supporters who were too busy to think for themselves:

  • Michael Morpurgo’s beautiful words remind us we have to #ShowTheLove for future generations - and act now http://po.st/iwishfilm
  • Poignant and powerful: watch this beautiful new short film calling us to #ShowTheLove for all we hold dear http://po.st/iwishfilm
  • Michael Morpurgo's wish for the world is worth sharing. Jeremy Irons [or Maxine Peake] agrees. Do you? WATCH http://po.st/iwishfilm #ShowTheLove
  • All beautiful things begin with a wish. Like this… http://po.st/iwishfilm #ShowTheLove
  • What does the writer of #WarHorse have to say about climate change? Simple. True. Do you agree? http://po.st/iwishfilm #ShowTheLove

I watched.  It's all nostalgic sepia tones and insistent mood music.  Here are a couple of the more memorable lines:

"... if we don't care for it, this good earth of ours will be as arid and lifeless as the moon.

"... our world is as fragile as you are, as I am, as the trees are, as the birds are, ...

It ends with Maxine in tears "loving and planting".

Of course, this is not something to analyse deeply, but to be swept up by; to feel that warm glow of being part of the greater whole that is WWF, and all the other charities that are part of this sentimental appeal for support, and cash.
