Get Connected: Alumni share their top tips for success

Posted in: Bath, Get Connected, Uncategorized

Bath graduates go on to do great things and our Get Connected events bring current students and successful alumni together to share their careers advice and industry insights.

London’s Dirty Martini played host to our popular networking and careers event where guests booked one-to-one appointments with our alumni volunteers, who had experience in industry leading organisations such as ASOS, TikTok, GE Capital and more.

The venue has a reputation for bespoke beverages, and guests were given the special opportunity to try our event-exclusive ‘Bathtini’  while they continued their conversations at the bar.

The Alumni Events Team organise Get Connected in Bath and London, and have also brought the popular careers events overseas to New York and Singapore.

Read on to discover some top tips from our alumni volunteers and their experience at Get Connected...

Alumni top tips for career success:

  • Initially, you should gain experience in a variety of roles, companies and cultures that can provide the knowledge base for establishing what and where you want to flourish – and, as importantly, where you don’t want to be long-term.
    – Richard Admiraal (BSc Business Administration 1982), Founder and Director at The Route
  • Never be afraid to ask questions at any stage of your career – you need to constantly learn, develop and see how to address challenges. Asking good questions is a sign of willingness to learn and challenge the status quo, which is invaluable in a lot of roles.
    – Paula Alves (BSc International Management & Modern Languages, French 1996), Global Head of Credit and Rates eCommerce and Global Market Access at Société Générale)
  • Identify and increase your competitive advantage via training, work experience and networking. You’re ultimately trying to answer the question: ‘A company hires me over other professionals because…’
    – Harry Ellis (BSc Mathematics 2006), Financial Services Contractor
  • Take time to consider career progression and training opportunities when looking at the start of your career, as the long-term benefits of skills learnt and experience gained are often overlooked for short-term gains.
    – Mayur Mistry (MPhys Physics 2008), Sales Operations Manager at TikTok
  • Gaining career ‘width’ early on gives you a solid grounding as you progress through your career.
    – Kristina Moln-Page (BSc Mathematical Sciences 2009), Head of Finance – Supply Chain at ASOS
  • While it’s important to put in the hard yards early on in your career, choose to work for someone or something inspiring – whether it’s a manager or a company. Core skills are acquired early, so do so in a challenging and inspirational environment.
    – Richard Roberts (BA Modern Languages & European Studies French & German 1997), Head of Origination and Corporate Development at Arrow Global
  • Make decisions with a ten-year horizon and stay broad: there will always be the opportunity to specialise further into your career.
    – James West (MPharm Pharmacy 2009), Director at Results International Group

What is it like to volunteer at Get Connected?

‘The calibre of students was excellent as always. It is good to see them making the effort to network and having the willingness to keep learning, even so early on in their careers.’
– Paula Alves (BSc International Management & Modern Languages, French 1996), Global Head of Credit and Rates eCommerce and Global Market Access at Société Générale)

‘[It was a] pleasure to be able to give back to the Bath community by using my experiences to help students and graduates navigate the often confusing early stages of their careers.’
– Harry Ellis (BSc Mathematics 2006), Financial Services Contractor

‘My key takeaway from the night was how lovely it was to be able to support the next generation of graduates, and hopefully offer them advice to help them on their career journey.’
– Kristina Moln-Page (BSc Mathematical Sciences 2009), Head of Finance – Supply Chain at ASOS
